Excerpt from The Fundamentals, Vol. 11: A Testimony to the Truth There has been much unavoidable delay in connection with the issue of this volume of "The Fundamentals," Volume XI. This was occasioned by the very serious illness of the former Executive Secretary of "The Fundamentals" Committee. This illness lasted for many months, only terminating in his death. He bore up very bravely and it was not thought wise to put the work in other hands lest he should be discouraged, feeling that there was no hope. Further delay was occasioned by the necessity of going over his manuscripts and papers and selecting such as had already been passed upon by the Committee for Volume XI and in passing upon other manuscripts in his possession. We have been greatly cheered by the letters that have come to us from all parts of the world, from ministers, missionaries, editors, college presidents, Sunday School superintendents and others, speaking of the great personal blessing which they have received from "The Fundamentals," and of the good accomplished by the various volumes in the lives of others to whom they have been passed on. The present volume will go to about one hundred thousand English-speaking Protestant pastors, evangelists, missionaries, theological professors, theological students, Y. M. C. A. secretaries, Y. W. C. A. secretaries, Sunday School superintendents, religious editors, and lay workers throughout the earth. May we ask the prayers of every reader that it may be abundantly blessed, as its predecessors have been, unto the strengthening of the faith of Christians, unto the defense of the truth against the various forms of error so prevalent at the present day, and unto the conversion of a multitude of the unsaved. Since the ninth volume reached our readers, hundreds of letters have come to us from them, telling us of their gratitude and appreciation, thanking the generous Two Christian Laymen, and reporting specific cases of blessing received. Thus we know that by the gracious influence of the Holy Spirit the fundamentals have been used to the conversion of sinners, to the strengthening of wavering believers, and to the full surrender and consecration to His service of earnest Christian men and women. To God be all the praise. May He bless the tenth volume as He did its predecessors, and use it to His glory and to the advancement of His cause. Our Circle of Prayer has grown again since we sent out the ninth volume. We do not publish special literature for the thousands who have joined it, but we simply ask them to pray in faith, (1) for the Two Christian Laymen, whose consecration and liberality make possible the publication and free distribution of the fundamentals and who are more than three score years and ten, that the Lord keep them and prosper all the work at home and abroad which they support; (2) for all who are connected with the great work of the fundamentals, including the writer of these lines who has been seriously ill since the beginning of November and is writing these lines while being under treatment in a sanatorium. Excerpt from A Testimony for the Truth, as Always Held and Promulgated by the Religious Society of Friends, and Against the Departures From the Principles of the Society: Which Have Appeared of Latter Time When the Society of Friends first appeared, and the preaching of George Fox was first heard, it was a time of great departure from primitive simplicity and purity in the professed Christian Church; as much so, perhaps, as any be fore or since: It was a day when corruption in the profession of religion, and apostasy from true Christian doctrine and practice prevailed; when the Spiritual character of the Gospel dispensation of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, appeared to be much lost sight of and denied; and the nominal profes sion of Christianity consisted of outward forms and rules, and divers rites and ceremonies and bodily performances, into which the people were led by a hired and mercenary priest hood, who fed themselves and not the flock; making a trade of religion, perverting the truths of the gospel, and teaching men to believe their carnal construction and explanation of the doctrines Of Christianity. They preached a faith which allowed and embraced many of the evil practices and sins of the heathen world; expounding the doctrines of the New Tes tament to admit of professed Christians being engaged in war, slavery, the use of oaths, a hireling ministry, and many other practices which were rejected and denied by the early Chris tians, and which are opposed to the Spirit and plain teaching of the faith 1' once delivered unto the saints.
