A lateral-load test was conducted at an offshore site on two 1.22-m-diameter drilled shafts penetrating through 13.1 m of dense sand overlying clay. The lateral-load test was conducted by pulling the two shafts toward each other under a specified lateral load and then relaxing the load to zero. This procedure was repeated for 40 cycles at each load level. With each load increase the application sequence was repeated to a maximum lateral load of 500 kN. Throughout the test, measurements were made of deflection and slope at the top of the shaft, and measurements of slope along the length of the shaft were obtained using a slope inclinometer.

This report presents the results of theoretical studies performed to understand and be able to predict better the response of "short" drilled shafts. A "short" drilled shaft has been defined as a shaft which undergoes less than two points of zero deflection when subjected to lateral loads. The first portion of this study was directed towards developing simplified procedures for estimating when a drilled shaft would respond as a "short" shaft, taking into account at least approximately the nonlinear response of the soil. The second portion of this study was directed toward improving the present procedure for predicting the response of "short" drilled shafts. Several modifications were made to existing procedures based on "p-y" curves to improve their ability to predict the response of short drilled shafts. These modifications were incorporated into a computer program with other modifications, which are presented in a companion project report

Drilled shafts have been used on a limited scale for many years as an alternative to driven piles in a variety of foundation problems. However, uncertainty about the behavior of the drilled shaft has forestalled widespread adoption. The subject package, by Dr. Lymon C. Reese of the University of Texas, is intended for use by bridge engineers, geotechnical engineers, and builders of pile foundations. The manual contains rational procedures and practical guidelines for the design and construction of drilled shaft foundations. Volume I presents a rational design procedure for drilled shafts under axial loading and includes guidelines on construction methods, inspection, load testing, specifications, and cost estimates. Volume II presents alternative methods for computing the response of the shaft to lateral loading and presents the structural design of the shaft for axial and/or lateral loading.

Drilled shafts socketed into rock are widely used as foundations for bridges and other important structures. Rock-socketed drilled shafts are also used to stabilize a landslide. The main loads applied on the drilled shafts are axial compressive or uplift loads as well as lateral loads with accompanying moments. Although there exist several analysis and design methods especially for rock-socketed drilled shafts under lateral loading, these methods were developed with assumptions without actual validations with field load test results. Some of the methods have been found to provide unsafe designs when compared to recently available field test data. Therefore, there is a need to develop a more rational design approach for laterally loaded drilled shafts socketed in rock. A hyperbolic non-linear p-y criterion for rock is developed in this study that can be used in conjunction with existing computer programs, such as COM624P, LPILE, and FBPIER, to predict the deflection, moment, and shear responses of a shaft under the applied lateral loads. Considerations for the effects of joints and discontinuities on the rock mass modulus and strength are included in the p-y criterion. Evaluations based on comparisons between the predicted and measured responses of full-scale lateral load tests on fully instrumented drilled shafts have shown the applicability of the proposed p-y criterion and the associated methods for determining the required input of rock parameters. In addition to the development of a hyperbolic p-y criterion for rock, a method for predicting lateral capacities of drilled shafts in rock and/or soils is developed for assessing the safety margin of the designed shafts against the design loads. A computer program LCPILE is developed using VC++ to facilitate computations. An elastic solution based on a variational approach is also developed for determining drilled shaft elastic deflection due to applied lateral loads in a two-layer soil layer system. The computational algorithm was coded in a Mathematical file for easy application. Finally, Briaud's method for deriving p-y curves of rock from pressuremeter or dilatometer test results is evaluated using available field test data. A modification to the Briaud's method is recommended for applications in rocks.

This classic title deals presents all one needs to know about pressuremeter test, a soil and rock test used in civil engineering. It consists of placing a cylindrical probe in the ground and expanding the probe to pressurize the soil or the rock horizontally. The pressure on the soil and the relative increase in cavity radius are obtained and give an in situ stress strain curve. The pressuremeter test is repeated at various depths in order to obtain profiles of soil parameters. The design applications of the preboring pressuremeter test include: shallow foundations under vertical loads, deep foundations under vertical and horizontal loads, ground anchors, cantilever drilled shaft walls and anchored bulkheads, pavements, stone columns, ground improvement and compaction control.

Sixteen centrifuge tests were conducted on high mast sign/signal structures (mast arm, pole, drilled shaft). The foundations, drilled shafts (25' and 25' embedment), were constructed in saturated sands under two different soil densities (loose and dense) using polymer slurry in their construction. The shafts were constructed with cement grout, steel reinforcement and spun in the centrifuge while still fluid, allowing the soil stresses around the shafts to equilibrate to field (prototype) values. The sign/signal structures were laterally loaded at three different points: 1) pole; 2) mid mast arm; and 3) mast arm tip. Loading on the pole applied no torque to the foundation, whereas loading on the mast arm and arm tip applied increasing values of torque. All of the lateral load tests with torque (i.e., mid mast and arm tip) failed through foundation rotation (failure: 15 degrees). The latter is attributed to the reduced vertical and horizontal effective stresses in the saturated vs. dry sands. The torsional resistance was found independent of lateral load magnitude, as well as soil properties (i.e., sand density, strength, etc.). However, the lateral resistance of the shafts was found significantly affected by the applied torque on the foundation. The reduction in lateral resistance as a function of torque to lateral load ratio graphs developed in Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) project BC354, RPWO #9 predicted quite satisfactorily the shafts lateral response. For the polymer slurry shaft construction, it was noted that no cake formation occurred. However, the torsional resistance of the shafts, especially in dense sands was higher than the mineral bentonite slurry. The latter was attributed to the polymer slurry penetrating within the borehole wall and bonding with shaft, as well as reinforcing the soil. Finally, the Mathcad file (FDOT project BC354, RPWO #9) developed to design/analyze high mast sign/signal pole structures for both lateral and torsional loading predicted the experiments satisfactorily.
