Two general areas of research are included: the first encompasses steroid hormone synthesis, metabolism and transport in the testis; and the second relates to hormonal regula tion of the seminiferous tubule with special emphasis on the con trol of Sertoli cell function. In addition, there are sections on the purification of unique testicular proteins and morpho logical studies with particular emphasis on the Sertoli cell. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Dr. Sherins and his staff at NICHD and to all of the people at the University of North Carolina who participated in the Conference arrangements, to Dr. Judson J. Van Wyk, Chief of the Pediatric Endocrinology Division, and Dr. H. Stanley Bennett, Director of the Laboratories for Reproductive Biology. Our very special thanks to Mrs. Carolyn Jaros for her help in handling the local arrangements. Mrs. Martha Byrd and Mrs. Linda Rollins typed the manuscripts. Miss Leslie Wells and Mr. Albert Smith kindly assisted in proof reading, and Dr. Elizabeth Wilson gave much help with the final editing process. To all of these people, we are most grateful.

The Testis: Advances in Physiology, Biochemistry, and Function, Volume IV, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in the physiology, biochemistry, and function of the testis. This volume updates those areas of greatest research activity and introduces in a more complete manner those topics which have developed as subject areas in themselves. It includes a chapter on testicular steroidogenesis, which updates and expands the chapter appearing in Volume II. In addition, chapters on the role of FSH in the testis, the specialized (largely endocrine) functions of the Sertoli cells, and the entire account of the tubular hormone inhibin have all been extensions of material in the original chapter on testicular endocrinology. Similarly, separate chapters on blood flow in the testis, fluid secretion, and the blood-testis barrier all report data on subjects largely unsuspected when Volumes I-III were published. Neither the first three volumes nor is the present one intended primarily for the nonprofessional biologist or the popular reader. The coverage should be most useful and informative to professional biologists. It is anticipated that this volume will also be of interest to advanced students of animal biology as an authoritative, comprehensive, and convenient review of significant recent information concerning the testis.

Andrew Sullivan, “one of the most influential journalists of the last three decades” (The New York Times) and founding editor of The Daily Dish presents a collection of 60 his most iconic and powerful essays of social and political commentary from The New Republic, The Atlantic, The New York Times Magazine, New York magazine, and more. Over the course of his career, Andrew Sullivan has never shied away from staking out bold positions on social and political issues. A fiercely independent conservative, in 1989 he wrote the first national cover story in favor of marriage equality, and then an essay, “The Politics of Homosexuality,” in The New Republic in 1993, an article called the most consequential of the decade in the gay rights movement. A pioneer of online journalism, he started blogging in 2000 and helped define the new medium with his blog, The Daily Dish. In 2007, he was one of the first political writers to champion the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, and his cover story for The Atlantic, “Why Obama Matters,” was seen as a milestone in that campaign’s messaging. In the past five years, he has proved a vocal foe both of Donald Trump and of wokeness on the left. Loved and loathed by both left and right, Sullivan is in a tribe of one. Bold, timely, and thought-provoking, this collection of “trenchant observations from an influential journalist” (Kirkus Reviews) on culture, politics, religion, and philosophy demonstrates why he continues to be ranked among the most intriguing and important public intellectuals in US media.

The Human Dilemma written by Barbara Dole Larsen and has been published by Dog Ear Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12 with Psychology categories.
Who has never wondered why people behave the way they do? They create glorious music, art and literature. They have uncovered the secrets of the universe and disease, yet have not been able to figure out how to get along with each other without war. The Human Dilemmasets out to find out why. It describes how humans evolved, how their wonderful brains work, and what they are like when they are born. The author explores the reasons individuals grow up with different personalities, depending on the societies in which they mature, from hunter-gatherers in Africa to industrial Americans. She then turns to relationships between the sexes, the temptations of power, and why religious differences lead to violence. The Human Dilemma explains, in simple, readable language, how human nature, customs and beliefs interfere with mankind's ability to resolve the overwhelming problems facing the world today. Violent conflicts between cultures have become more volatile over the years. Many believe it is man's nature to fight, yet ancient civilizations like Crete were peaceful and everyone was treated equally, women as well as men. The same is true of two hunting gathering tribes in Africa that have followed the same way of life for thousands of years. Perhaps it is just as human to cooperate peacefully in solving problems as it is to fight over them, and just as human to see our fellows as equal instead of superior or inferior. Why then do men regard women as inferior in so many societies? And why do so many nations plunge into battle, especially since the invention of nuclear bombs makes it possible to wipe out our entire species? The newest peril is global warming, caused by the spewing of carbon into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, which may eventually change our climate back to the days before mankind existed. Some animals have already become extinct because they cannot adjust to warmer weather. Humans may not survive such a drastic change. Our magnificent brains are capable of inventing solutions to all the problems confronting us and entrepreneurs are eager to put these inventions into practice. Why, then, don't we do it? Is there some flaw in our nature that makes it easier to blame each other instead and find excuses for relieving our frustrations in warfare? As the author studied the sciences for answers to her questions, she became convinced that only by fully understanding our nature and the reasons why it is difficult for us to confront our problems can we hope to resolve them and continue to survive. Her conclusions are found in The Human Dilemma. "An original and thought-provoking book which will appeal to a very wide audience." -Richard Edelman, Psychoanalyst "In her wonderfully wide-ranging exploration of human nature, Barbara Larsen has distilled her research into a lucid and absolutely fascinating book." -Richard Edelman, Psychoanalyst "The writer's style is open and exploratory, warmly self-sharing, and it is an enjoyable as well as a searching and provocative learning experience." -Saul L. Brown, Emeritus Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA "Larsen skillfully weaves together current theory and research from an impressive variety of sources." -Arthur A. Dole, Emeritus Professor of Education, University of Pennsylvania
