Excerpt from d104-Book of Medical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Matter is Impenetrable. - That is, two portions of matter can not occupy the same place at the same time. Strictly speaking, this applies only to the ultimate particles of a body. In many phenomena bodies do seem to penetrate each other. For instance, the volume of a mixture of salt and water, or of alcohol and water, is less than the sum of the volumes before they are mixed. In these cases the penetration is only apparent. The penetration of the water by the salt is due to the fact that water, like all other bodies, is porous; that is, it has spaces or interstices between the ultimate particles of which the mass is composed, which are unoccupied by matter, and into which the particles of salt crowd themselves. Divisibility. - Three divisions of matter are recognized - viz., masses, molecules, and atoms. A mass or body is any distinct portion of matter appreciable to the senses. This has been made necessary by the fact that within the past few years most of the medical colleges have extended their course of study from two to three years, thus giving more time to the study of chemistry. The recent introduction to therapeutics of a large number of synthetical compounds, has made it necessary to include a description of these remedies, which has added much new material. While all these synthetical remedies have not been introduced, all those best known have found a place. It is believed that this will make the book more useful for reference. Several new tables of analytical tests have been introduced, as a means of comparing the properties of the group of substances so tabulated. A new chapter on Physiological and Clinical Chemistry has been added, which deals with the chemistry of nutrition, foods, digestion, milk, and the urine. This chapter has been made as practical as possible, giving the principles of feeding and diet, the clinical examination of stomach digestion for diagnostic purposes, the easier methods for the examination of milk, and a fairly complete guide to the clinical examination of urine and urinary calculi.
