Excerpt from A Manual of Operative Surgery, Vol. 1 of 2 AT the request of Sir Frederick Treves, I undertook the responsibility Of a complete revision of this Manual, of which the Second Edition has for some time been out of print. For the delay in the appearance of the Third Edition I must ask indulgence, in view Of the great amount Of work involved, and the extensive changes and additions that have had to be made. The ever-growing importance of Abdominal Surgery rendered it advisable that the Operations on the abdomen should be grouped together in the first volume. Some sections have been curtailed or omitted, such as that relating to Lateral Lithotomy, but most of them have been added to, and several are wholly new. A considerable number of fresh illustrations have been inserted, and a series of coloured plates has been introduced to make clearer the anatomy of certain important Operations. These coloured plates have all been drawn Specially for this Edition from dissections in the Museums of the Royal College of Surgeons and the London Hospital Medical College. I beg to thank the Councils of those institutions for their kindness and courtesy in this matter. So far as present surgical experience goes I have selected for description the best methods of performing the various Operations, but I have endeavoured to avoid encumbering the work with foot-notes and details as to the exact forms of incision, etc., employed by many individual surgeons. Both surgery and medicine, I venture to think, have been greatly hampered in the past by the needless introduction of names. Excerpt from d104-Book of Operative Surgery The First English Edition, published in 1895, was translated from the Second German Edition, published in 1894. This, the Second English Edition, which is a translation of the F ourth (latest) German Edition, is only a few pages less than twice the size of its predecessor. There have also been added 70 new illustrations, many of Which are coloured. The sections dealing with Anaesthesia, the Treatment of Wounds, the Head and Neck, Thorax, Abdomen and Pelvis, have been entirely rewritten, and' the same may be said of the sections on Amputations and Excisions. Compared, therefore, with the former English Edition, the present work may be regarded as practically a new book. Since the publication of the F ourth German Edition there has appeared, in the Zentralblatt few Chirurgie, of l0th J annary, 1903, a paper from the pen of Professor kocher, entitled Mobilisierung des Duodenum und Gastro duodenostomie. The author speaks so highly of the operation that I have considered it advisable to introduce, in the form of an appendix, a translation of this important paper. For the time and labour expended in the translation the writer derives no i'nconsiderable reward from the consciousness that the teaching and methods of so great a master as Professor kocher will be welcomed not only by senior students. Excerpt from A System of Surgery, Vol. 1 of 2: Pathological, Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Operative The favor with which the work has been received is sufficiently attested by the rapid exhaustion of four large editions, by its translation into the Dutch language, and by the universal commendation bestowed upon it by the periodical press, both at home and abroad. This evidence, so gratifying to my feelings as an author, instead of abating my ardor, has only served to stimulate me to increased exertion to render the work still more useful as a faithful exponent of the existing state of the art and science of surgery. Upon the edition now issued upwards of five years of arduous labor have been expended. The work now covers the whole field of operative surgery. In the first of the five parts into which the volume is divided, the preparation of the patient, the disinfection of the surgeon and his assistants, the methods of sterilisation, surgical technique, treatment of wounds and anæsthesia have been greatly amplified, local and regional anæsthesia being dealt with at length. In the second part the surgery of the vascular system has been systematically considered, no less than 106 operations on the arteries being described, while the suture of veins receives full attention. The third part, dealing with the surgery of the nervous system, has been rearranged as well as largely amplified. The portion devoted to the operations on the brain and cranial nerves has been practically rewritten, and full acknowledgment is given to the work of the present-day neurologists, especially in connection with the removal of tumours and of the Gasserian ganglion.
