Excerpt from Exercises in Practical Chemistry The list Of apparatus given at the outset shows what it is desirable that a student should have for the performance of the exercises; but those who have not access to a chemical laboratory, and who are unwilling to incur the expense Of providing themselves with a complete set Of apparatus from a chemical dealer, will find in the Appendix a number Of suggestions for the construction of pieces Of apparatus which can be made very cheaply. The authors have endeavoured, by repeating nearly every experiment in exact' conformity with their written description, to insure that the student who carefully follows their directions shall command success; but as they cannot but fear that many errors and omissions may, nevertheless, have escaped them, they will be grateful for any suggestions from those engaged in teaching who may make use Of their book. It is only by a large experience of the errors into which beginners are liable to fall, that the many ways Of going wrong can be dis covered and stopped. The question Of chemical nomenclature is at present in such a condition that every lecturer or writer must choose for him self the names he considers least Objectionable. The names assigned to substances in this volume are, with a few exceptions (made with a view to consistency), the same as are used in Roscoe's 'lessons in Chemistry, ' and Watts' edition of 'fownes' Manual.' Excerpt from A Text-Book of Practical Chemistry This work is an attempt to place in the student's hands a Manual of Practical Chemistry which shall be a reference book in a convenient form. Though not claiming in any way to be a specialist's book, it does aim at giving the student a thorough knowledge of general methods, so that he will be in a position to proceed to specialist work without difficulty. The scope of the book does not allow of the inclusion of any very advanced work in Physical Chemistry; it indicates the basic lines along which the student may proceed and prepares him for seeking inspiration from the advanced theoretical text-books. No great claim to originality is put forward, but a whole-hearted attempt has been made to indicate the best methods of doing everything. To this end a large number of original papers have been consulted, in addition to most of the text-books quoted in the literature of each branch, and the authors have also drawn on twelve years of teaching experience and their own experimental work. It is believed that every source of special information has been acknowledged in the text. The authors' thanks are due to Mr. J. S. Firth, B.Sc., for kindly reading through a large part of the MSS.; to Messrs. Clowes and Coleman for permission to make stereo-plates of the logarithm and atomic weight tables in their "Quantitative Analysis"; to Messrs. J. J. Griffin and A. Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Physical Chemistry In organising the practical work in connection with a class of Physical Chemistry (1) a teacher may himself carry out the measurements while the whole class look on, or (2) he may divide the class into sets of two or more and assign one experiment to each set, or (3) he may adopt the "one student one experiment" plan. Of these three methods, the third is undoubtedly the best, because a student is made responsible for an experiment in a way that can never be when another is associated with him in the work. In the second method the tendency is for one student of a set to lead while the others make no attempt at initiative and lose the best part of the training obtainable in a laboratory. Close supervision is, of course, essential when valuable instruments are being handled, and frequently the teaching staff is too small for the demonstrating to be efficient according to the third plan, so that the second is adopted, which, however, is much to be preferred to the first. The time available for Practical Physical Chemistry is usually very meagre, and has an important bearing on the organisation of Laboratory Work. The best system would be one in which the question of time had never to be considered. As things are, however, a student, as a rule, can afford out of his day's work only one period of two to three hours for Practical Physical Chemistry. It is important, therefore, that the exercises should be such that they can be finished in one period not extending beyond the limits mentioned.
