Excerpt from Text-Book of Physiological Chemistry in Thirty Lectures Physiology and physiological chemistry were at one time a single field of investigation. The latter, owing to the remarkable progress of the exact sciences chemistry and physics, has now developed to such an impor tant branch of natural science that it is altogether impossible today for any one scientist to master thoroughly in all its details the whole field of physiology. Little by little, there has developed a sharp distinction between pure physiology and physiological chemistry. It is clear that an artificial separation of two such closely related fields of investiga tion must work to disadvantage for the development of each, so that it is fortunate to find it recognized more and more that the whole science of physiology can only develop satisfactorily when there is an intimate exchange of ideas between investigators in the two fields. The chemical decompositions in the tissues do not take place beside the physiological processes, but are bound up with them. In no single case can we carry out any distinction-in such a sense; and with those organs in which the relations between the functions and the metabolism are not known, this is chiefly because of our limited knowledge concerning the latter. In this connection we need only recall the whole nervous system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physiology Tma high reputation acquired, on both sides of the Atlantic, by Dr. Foster's text-book of Physiology as a lucid exposition of the science in its most modern aspect, has seemed to call for an edition more thor oughly adapted to the wants of the American student. The plan of the author has presupposed an acquaint ance with the details of physiological anatomy, such as the student is accustomed to look for in his trea tises on physiology. The absence of these details has rendered many parts of the work vague, if not altogether incomprehensible, and has therefore proved a serious drawback to the usefulness of the book as an accompaniment to lectures on physiology as it is usu all y taught in our schools, and this deficiency the editor has endeavored to supply by brief notes and the intro duction of a large number of illustrations. Excerpt from Physiology Preliminary Course Lectures I have endeavored in the delivery of these lectures to put within the reach and comprehension Of the first course student the foundation facts and princi ples upon which the stately edifice of physiology is built. And in the publication of them, which I have only presumed to venture in consequence of repeated requests on the part of the students of my class, I have adhered strictly to the Spirit, and as far as I could, to the letter of the delivery. This explanation will suffice, I hope, to excuse the latitude of expres sion and selection which would be accorded to off hand, lecture-room, delivery, and which might be inexcusable in a text-book compiled for the more careful study of leisure hours. Excerpt from Outline of a Course of Lectures on Human Physiology This little book contains an outline of two short Courses of Lectures on Human Physiology delivered to many thousands of persons at large towns in the North of England and the Midlands, and also in the Metropolis. It embodies an attempt I have made to excite an interest in, and give some sound elementary knowledge of, a branch of science which surpasses all others in its practical bearing upon the maintenance and improvement of the health of the community. It is not intended as a text-book, but as an adjunct to the Lecture-room Although written chiefly to help the -numerous students who attend my own Lectures, it may also possibly prove of service to medical and other students who are engaged in attending Lectures. Excerpt from Lectures on the Physiology of Plants The absence of any text-book in the English language treating at all fully of the Physiology of Plants, so as to meet the requirements of advanced students, sug gested to me, at an early stage in my career as a teacher of the subject, that I should publish my own lecture-notes just sufficiently expanded to make them readable. Of this suggestion, this volume is the out come. The work of preparation began in 1877, but, on account of the pressure of other duties, it was not until 1882 that it had proceeded far enough to warrant going to press. I hoped at that time to have com pleted the Lectures within a twelvemonth at longest, but failing health and increasing demands upon my time have extended the period to four years. In con sequence of this delay, it will be found that in the earlier Lectures the most recent researches have not been noticed. There will, I hope, be an opportunity to remedy this defect in a subsequent edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Teaching of Physiology in Medical Schools The lectures last a full hour and are frequently held in a badly lighted, badly ventilated, and overcrowded room. Other lectures are sometimes given in this room the hour before, or the student goes from the vitiated air of one lecture directly to another. Students are not given chairs, but are squeezed onto hard, uncomfortable benches. They have no place on which to lay their note-books, and no opportunity is afforded to write notes after the hour, while, the lecture is fresh in the mind. As a rule, in medical schools many of the lectures in physiology are given before the student has any acquaint ance whatever with the anatomy of the structures considered, and still more are heard before the student has any real anatomical knowledge, - that based on actual contact with tissues and not upon a glimpse of a distant prosection or a hasty glance at a diagram. Lectures on the functions of the brain and the spinal cord are often delivered to students who never have so much as seen the brain or cord. Pict ures in a text-book supply the place of real knowledge. Much of the student's learning is mock physiology, based on mock anatomy. His ignorance of the structures and real appearance of the parts he studies is exceeded by his ignorance of their chemistry. Excerpt from A Manual of Physiology: With Practical Exercises AT the present day, to teach Physiology by means of formal lectures and systematic text-books alone is no more satis factory than it would be to till the farms of America with the wooden plough of Bengal. Some benefit can certainly be gained from the mere reading of a good text-book or listening to a good lecturer; but the result will be meagre in comparison with the capabilities of the subject, and the knowledge thus acquired will be more likely to sink to the level of cram than to rise to the level of education. In this book an attempt has been made to interweave formal exposition with practical work. In the way my experience at the Harvard Medical School and the Western Reserve University has shown to be best suited to the needs and the opportunities of the American student. An arrangement of the Practical Exercises with reference to the systematic course has this great advantage - that by a little care it is possible to secure that the student shall be actually working at a given subject at the time it is being lectured on. Cross-reference from lecture-room to laboratory, and from laboratory to lecture-room, from the detailed discussion of the relations of a phenomenon to the living fact itself, is thus rendered easy, natural, and fruitful. Excerpt from Physiology Class-Book Recognizing the pedagogical principle that to tell a pupil what he can easily find out for himself deprives him of an opportu nity to think, while withholding from him what he cannot find out, wastes his time in useless endeavor, the aim has been to state in clear, concise English what the pupil Must be told about the subject. This information is intended to serve as a basis for the recitation; and is to be supplemented by text-book references, lectures, experi ments, Observations, and illustrative drawings. The blank spaces are for the recording of experiments, observations, etc., by the pupil, so that the completed book may contain his own work as well as the subject matter furnished him. Excerpt from An American d104-Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 Advantage has been taken of the necessity of issuing a second edition of the American d104 - Book of Physiology to alter somewhat its general arrangement. The book has proved to be successful, and for the most part has met only with kindly and encouraging Criticisms from those who have made use of it. Many teachers, however, have suggested that the size of the book, when issued in a single volume, has constituted to some extent an inconvenience when regarded from the standpoint of a student's text-book that may be needed daily for consultation in the lecture-room or the labora tory. It has been thought best, therefore, to issue the present edition in two volumes, with the hope that the book may thereby be made more serviceable to those for whose aid it was especially written.
