Excerpt from A Course in Inorganic Chemistry for Colleges This book is intended for college students who devote a year to general chemistry. It is primarily a students' book, and is not designed to replace the large text-books, which are better suited for reference than for class use. The descriptive portions of the text include the well-established topics usually taught in a year of college chemistry, though considerable space is devoted to the application of modern principles to chemical industries. The theoretical portions include not only the principles whose value was demonstrated long ago, but also many recent conceptions, which are fast becoming indispensable in interpreting chemical and physical phenomena. Some of the theoretical topics, which are distributed through the text at serviceable points, are the theory of electrolytic dissociation, reversible reactions, equilibrium, catalysis, vapor pressure, electrolysis, and the behavior of dissolved substances. It is hoped that the book as a whole will be found adequate for all students whose work is confined to a year and will likewise serve as a broad foundation for those who continue the study of chemistry. Excerpt from Recent Advances in Organic Chemistry The excerpts from previous prefaces printed below will enable the reader to see the main ideas which have been kept in view since the inception of this book in 1908. The demand for a fourth edition within little more than a year after the publication of the third edition seems to show that this method of treating the subject has been acceptable to the chemical public. In writing a book such as this, several difficulties have to be 'avoided. In the first place, it is essential to ensure that the text does not degenerate into a mere series of arid abstracts of authors' papers, for nothing is duller than chemical pemmican. Secondly, since it may reasonably be assumed that some readers are not perfectly acquainted with the earlier history of every field of research described in the volume, it is necessary to provide a foundation upon Which the description of recent work can be based. For example, to restrict an account of the work done upon the terpenes to papers published only within the last three years would be to distort the whole perspective of the subject and render the book unreadable. The title, "Recent Advances," was purposely chosen so as to permit the inclusion of earlier work wherever this was necessary; and the words must not be interpreted as meaning that only the very latest papers in any branch will be described. In the third place, the limitations of space complicate the author's problem. Out of the many fields of interest which the subject contains, he has to make a selection, since otherwise the book would be too unwieldy. How is the process of selection to be carried out? In the present volume an attempt has been made to hold the balance evenly between the theory and the practice of the subject, so as to give as fair a representation of the whole field as possible. Excerpt from A Short Text-Book of Inorganic Chemistry Although the number of short Text books of Inorganic Chemistry is large, it is hoped that this little book will supply a definite want among teachers and students, corresponding to that which the Editor has himself felt. The principles which have guided the Author in writing the book are fully stated in his Preface, and with these the Editor entirely concurs ; but in adapting the book for English students certain alterations and additions were necessary, and to these the Author has given his full consent The whole book has been carefully revised throughout, and the physical constants brought up to date. Considerable additions have been made to the descriptions of water, atmospheric air, coal, iron, &c. Short accounts of Gay-Lussac's law, Avogadro's law, and the manufacture of coal-gas have also been introduced into the text. Excerpt from A d104-Book of Experimental Chemistry (With Descriptive Notes) For Students of General Inorganic Chemistry While no particular claim to originality is made for this text-book, as many of the experiments have been described previously, yet the writer believes that the book will be found to be something more than a mere compilation. It grew originally out of a personal demand for a text book which would embody: (a) a clear, accurate and comprehensive presentation of the fundamentals of the science; (b) specific directions for laboratory work, coupled with such questions as lead the student to observe, compare and generalize, and would therefore provide a method for the scientific development of the principles under discussion; (c) a sufficient amount of discussion and application of the principles involved in the experiments to foster the interest and to direct the Observa tions that energy may not be spent indiscriminately, and (d) those physico chemical generalizations which are essential to the explanation of much of the phenomena of inorganic chemistry. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Inorganic Chemistry Up till about twenty-five years ago, Inorganic Chemistry was based mainly on certain fundamental laws and theories, notably the Laws of the Conservation of Mass and of Energy, the Laws of Chemical Combination, the Atomic Theory, Avogadro's Hypothesis, and the Periodic System of Classifying the Elements. The recent development of the subject is characterized by the discovery and applications of certain laws and theories usually associated with Physical Chemistry, more particularly the principles of Chemical Equilibrium (including the Law of Mass Action), the conception of Osmotic Pressure and its application to the determination of Molecular Weights in Solution, and the Electrolytic Dissociation Theory. The newer laws and theories are a necessary supplement to, and extension of the older principles established by the labours of Boyle, Lavoisier, Richter, Dalton, Avogadro and Mendeleeff, but their application to the problems of Inorganic Chemistry has to a large extent revolutionized the study of that subject. It is now generally recognized that the newer views have contributed enormously to the development of chemistry, but in spite of this fact their general adoption into courses of elementary instruction in this country has been very slow. The present book is written throughout from the modern standpoint, and it is hoped that it may contribute in some degree to the wider use of the newer principles at a relatively early stage in chemical courses. Chemistry is an experimental science, and no adequate knowledge of it can be gained without practical work. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Inorganic Chemistry, Vol. 1: Part I.-An Introduction to Modern Inorganic Chemistry; Part II.-The Inert Gases The preparation of this Introductory Part has proved to be a task of peculiar difficulty. At the outset we would emphasise the fact that our aim has not been to write a complete text-book of Physical Chemistry. Numerous excellent works have already been devoted to this subject, and we felt that a volume on such lines would scarcely serve as a suitable introduction to this series. Whilst Physical Chemistry deals with the general principles applied to all branches Of theoretical chemistry, we have been desirous of emphasising their application to Inorganic Chemistry, with which branch of the subject this series of text-books is exclusively concerned. To this end practically all the illustrations to the laws and principles discussed deal with inorganic substances. Again, there are many subjects, such as the methods employed in the accurate determination of atomic weights, which are not generally regarded as forming part Of Physical Chemistry. Yet these are subjects of supreme importance to the student Of Inorganic Chemistry, and are accordingly included in this Introduction. We have attempted in the opening chapter to present to the reader a concise account of the Fundamental Laws upon which the modern study of Inorganic Chemistry rests, and to show how they have been confirmed by modern experimental research. In the two succeeding chapters the general Properties of Elements and Compounds are discussed, whilst Chapter IV. Is devoted to the study of the various methods of determining Molecular Weights and the discussion of the values sometimes Obtained. Chemical Change and the Properties of Acids, Bases, and Salts form the subject-matter of Chapters V. And VI.
