La transformación experimentada por la industria editorial y los sistemas de información y comunicación en los últimos años, con una intensa migración de lo analógico a lo digital, nos obliga a repensar la forma en que concebimos los documentos, la lectura y la escritura, la creación y la investigación, tanto desde una perspectiva científica como desde una perspectiva cultural. Las tecnologías digitales están articulando nuevas mediaciones, que es preciso analizar para efectuar un diagnóstico de la situación actual y verificar los cambios experimentados en nuestras prácticas. El mundo electrónico provoca una triple ruptura: instaura una nueva técnica de difusión de la escritura, propicia una nueva relación con los textos e impone a estos una nueva forma de inscripción. Además, obliga al lector a prescindir de las herencias y tradiciones que lo han constituido como receptor, ya que el mundo electrónico ya no utiliza la imprenta, ignora el «libro unitario» y es ajeno a la materialidad del «códex». Es, al mismo tiempo, una revolución de la modalidad técnica de la reproducción de lo escrito, una revolución de la percepción de las entidades textuales y una revolución de las estructuras y formas más fundamentales de los soportes de la cultura escrita. Por otra parte el texto electrónico rompe la linealidad argumentativa propia del discurso impreso, sustituida por una lógica propia del hipertexto. En este sentido se produce igualmente una mutación epistemológica provocada por la transformación de los sistemas de construcción y acreditación del discurso científico, confiado en muchos casos a la iniciativa del lector. Al mismo tiempo la permeabilidad del texto electrónico, en el cual la intervención de los lectores es cada vez más importante, introduce una variable determinante en los conceptos de autoría y de propiedad intelectual.

This book offers a critical introduction to the core technologies underlying the Internet from a humanistic perspective. It provides a cultural critique of computing technologies, by exploring the history of computing and examining issues related to writing, representing, archiving and searching. The book raises awareness of, and calls for, the digital humanities to address the challenges posed by the linguistic and cultural divides in computing, the clash between communication and control, and the biases inherent in networked technologies. A common problem with publications in the Digital Humanities is the dominance of the Anglo-American perspective. While seeking to take a broader view, the book attempts to show how cultural bias can become an obstacle to innovation both in the methodology and practice of the Digital Humanities. Its central point is that no technological instrument is culturally unbiased, and that all too often the geography that underlies technology coincides with the social and economic interests of its producers. The alternative proposed in the book is one of a world in which variation, contamination and decentralization are essential instruments for the production and transmission of digital knowledge. After the conquest of Mexico, colonial authorities attempted to enforce Christian beliefs among indigenous peoples—a project they envisioned as spiritual warfare. The Invisible War assesses this immense but dislocated project by examining all known efforts in Central Mexico to obliterate native devotions of Mesoamerican origin between the 1530s and the late eighteenth century. The author's innovative interpretation of these efforts is punctuated by three events: the creation of an Inquisition tribunal in Mexico in 1571; the native rebellion of Tehuantepec in 1660; and the emergence of eerily modern strategies for isolating idolaters, teaching Spanish to natives, and obtaining medical proof of sorcery from the 1720s onwards. Rather than depicting native devotions solely from the viewpoint of their colonial codifiers, this book rescues indigenous perspectives on their own beliefs. This is achieved by an analysis of previously unknown or rare ritual texts that circulated in secrecy in Nahua and Zapotec communities through an astute appropriation of European literacy. Tavárez contends that native responses gave rise to a colonial archipelago of faith in which local cosmologies merged insights from Mesoamerican and European beliefs. In the end, idolatry eradication inspired distinct reactions: while Nahua responses focused on epistemological dissent against Christianity, Zapotec strategies privileged confrontations in defense of native cosmologies.
