Therefore, the main question to answer is: “What makes a text a text?“ Even if this might look at first sight very simple to answer, this topic is far more complex than originally expected. In fact, since the 1960s there has been a linguistic science field named “text linguistic“ which deals with this question in greater detail.

Was macht das Wesen dieses Phänomens aus und wie kann jener Begriff von ‚Nicht-Texten‘ abgegrenzt werden? Mit der Klärung dieser Frage beschäftigt sich die Ende der 1960er Jahre entstandene und noch recht junge, sprachwissenschaftliche Disziplin der Textlinguistik. Den ersten spontanen Versuch einer Textdefinition machte Hartmann im Jahre 1964: „Mit ‚Text‘ kann man alles bezeichnen, was an Sprache so vorkommt, da es Sprache in kommunikativer oder wie immer sozialer, d.h. partnerbezogener Form ist.“ Weiterhin findet man im Duden unter dem Suchbegriff „Text“ folgende Eintragungen: 1a. [schriftlich fixierte] im Wortlaut festgelegte, inhaltlich zusammenhängende Folge von Aussagen; 1b. Stück Text, Auszug aus einem Buch o. Ä. ; 2. (als Grundlage einer Predigt dienende) Bibelstelle; 3. Unterschrift zu einer Illustration, Abbildung; 4. die zu einem Musikstück gehörenden Worte. (http://www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/Text_Aeuszerung_Schrift) Diesen beiden Definitionen gelingt es immerhin, dem „Durchschnittssprachteilnehmer“ den Textbegriff näher zu bringen – für die wissenschaftliche Betrachtung beziehungsweise Herangehensweise sind sie allerdings unzureichend. Es wäre wenig sinnvoll, an dieser Stelle unzählige andere Merkmals- und Textdefinitionen zu erwähnen, da dies zu einer gewissen Unordnung führen würde, die nicht unbedingt zur besseren Überschaubarkeit und Handhabbarkeit des Begriffs beiträgt. Deshalb beschränken wir uns auf die sieben viel zitierten Textualitätskriterien von Beaugrande/Dressler. Diese sind: Kohäsion, Kohärenz, Intentionalität, Akzeptabilität, Informativität, Situationalität und Intertextualität. Doch so häufig diese Kriterien auch zitiert wurden, sie bleiben dennoch umstritten. Diese Arbeit hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, diese Textualitätskriterien zu beschreiben, kritisch zu beleuchten und mit alternativen Textdefinitionen zu vergleichen, um so die Problematik aufzuzeigen, warum es bis heute nicht gelungen ist, einen allgemein gültigen Textbegriff zu finden.

The definition of text has been discussed extensively among linguists. They have taken different approaches to define what makes a text a text. Although some were similar, no consensus on a definition has been reached yet. The question is particularly interesting in regard to text production. This assignment is therefore of interest to text producers and those who analyse texts. Texts serve the purpose of conveying a message or information. More literally, their purpose is to communicate with the recipient. Thus, to produce meaningful and comprehensible texts, a basic understanding of the criteria for textuality is essential. This assignment and its results are based on an extensive literature research of books, scientific journals, and the internet. The assignment begins by exploring the definition of “text” and “textuality”. Both concepts are defined, and some linguistic issues are discussed. The work of De Beaugrande and Dressler often serves as a point of reference when discussing this topic. They defined seven criteria for textuality to distinguish texts from non-texts. These criteria are examined and defined in the third section, and examples of each criterion are given. Excerpts are taken from the “I have a dream” speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. The aim is to determine whether this speech can be regarded as a text based on the criteria of De Beaugrande and Dressler. The assignment ends with a critical discussion and conclusion.
