Zumindest in der frühen Neuzeit wurden Wissensideale weitgehend "im Rahmen" bestimmter Wissenskontexte formuliert und auf diese Weise in eine Historisierung hineingezogen. Außerdem waren die verschiedensten Wissensformen, z. B. wissenschaftliche Projekte, politische Entwürfe, konfessionelle Vorstellungen, ästhetische Konzeptionen und autobiographische Selbstbilder auf das Engste miteinander verflochten. Die Beiträge im interdisziplinär angelegten Band betrachten anhand ausgewählter und historisch wichtiger Fälle aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln verschiedene "Methoden" des Erwerbs, der Begründung, Organisation, Darstellung, Anwendung und Vermittlung von Wissen im Europa des 17. Jahrhunderts.
