This book contains the results of a three-year research programme by a joint team of experts from four different EU countries. The main focus of this research was on investigating the possibility of using abandoned underground mines for the disposal of hazardous chemical waste with negligible pollution of the environment. The contributors address many aspects that are common to underground disposal of nuclear waste, such as: the properties and behaviour of waste-isolating clay materials and practical ways of preparing and applying them, development of tools/software to assess the stability, performance, transport of contaminants inside and outside the repository, and risks associated with different repository concepts considering the long-term safety of the biosphere. Thomas Morel tells the story of subterranean geometry, a forgotten discipline that developed in the silver mines of early modern Europe. Mining and metallurgy were of great significance to the rulers of early modern Europe, required for the silver bullion that fuelled warfare and numerous other uses. Through seven lively case studies, he illustrates how geometry was used in metallic mines by practitioners using esoteric manuscripts. He describes how an original culture of accuracy and measurement paved the way for technical and scientific innovations, and fruitfully brought together the world of artisans, scholars and courts. Based on a variety of original manuscripts, maps and archive material, Morel recounts how knowledge was crafted and circulated among practitioners in the Holy Roman Empire and beyond. Specific chapters deal with the material culture of surveying, map-making, expertise and the political uses of quantification. And it addresses what are still burning issues: the role of the authorities, the judicial system and the media & and the suffering of those affected. It establishes connections to the never-ending series of attacks. What impact does the NSU have on the right-wing scene today? People have been receiving menacing letters signed ?NSU 2.0= and have been threatened with details taken from police sources about their private lives & and once again the authorities seem to have been unable to identify the perpetrators for years. The NSU complex is a challenge for the country. The mammoth court trial and a whole series of investigative committees have made progress in clarifying it, but have by no means brought it to a conclusion. The authors of this book clearly show that the state and society must not simply draw a line under it.
