Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, grade: 2,0, University of Applied Sciences Wildau (Institute of Technology), course: Cross cultural communication, language: English, abstract: Travel agencies call Thailand the "land of smile" in order to attract tourists. But also companies might find this "smiling" mentality interesting and could benefit from it. In 2050 two-third of all people will live in Asia and most companies are looking for new production or sales markets. This paper will evaluate cultural reasons for the saying "land of smile" and its effects. Besides online and book sources, personal experiences from business and leisure visits in Thailand will form the basis of the discussion. How should people and companies behave in Thailand in order to be most satisfied and successful? This is one of the key questions which will be discussed by taking the aviation industry ("Thai Smile" Airline) as an example. The following essay will first give an overview about Thailand's history and today's economic and social specifications. Afterwards theoretic input will be used to link the historic development of the Thai culture to models like Hofstede's dimensions. The main part will then be the effects and opportunities from the discussed culture for e.g. aviation companies.

Written by an established expert on Thailand, this is one of the first books to fully investigate the Thai media’s role during the Thaksin government’s first term. Incorporating political economy and media theory, the book provides a unique insight into globalization in Southeast Asia, analyzing the role of communications and media in regional cultural politics. Examining the period from the mid 1990s, Lewis makes a sustained comparison between Thailand and its neighbouring countries in relation to the media, business, politics and popular culture. Covering issues including business development, tourism, the Thai movie industry and the war on terror, the book argues that globalization as it relates to media, can be patterned on Thai experiences.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Sawasdee Khrap welcome to the kingdom of Thailand. A number of valid characterizations such as The Land of Smiles , The Land of Temples and Pagodas and Tropical Vacation Paradise describe Thailand at its best. In addition to these picturesque synonyms, the kingdom gained international recognition through its growing travel and hospitality industry. In 2001 Thailand once again booked the top spot as most preferred tourist destination in South East Asia as well as runner-up position in all of Asia, second only to China. When Muslim extremists hijacked four domestic U.S. flights and cowardly carried out the terrorist attack of 9-11 on the U.S.A., the global travel sector felt the direct impact of the terrorist attacks like no other industry. From one day to the other tourists decided to stay at or close to home and hotel rooms were left vacant. As major employer and source for foreign exchange earnings, Thailand s tourism industry was no exception to the threat. As the brutality and human tragedy of this incident will always be remembered, the following report will focus solely on the implications for the tourism and hospitality industry. In specific, the text will take an in-depth look at the development of the first class hotel market in Bangkok following the September attacks. The report looks at 14 top hotels of Bangkok and their performance from January 2000 to March 2002. Special attention lies on the seven months following the U.S.A. attacks in September 2001, whereas a full year comparison of 2000 and 2001 will also provide valid information. The tourism and hospitality industry is a major economic driving factor not only for Thailand, but also for many other Asian nations. Therefore, the beginning of this report deals with the regional development after the terrorist attacks. This way the reader will get an understanding of the current situation in Asia and the general impact of 9-11. After a general overview of Thailand, the first class hotel market of Bangkok will be analyzed by its occupancy, ADR and RevPar development. These performance related information create the backbone of this report and support further assumptions and findings. For validity reasons, the results are then compared to two independent surveys. The fourth section is made up of the changes in travel patterns, tourism demand and strategies, followed by a comparison of the two best performing individual hotels and their advantages over [...]

Welcome to the Land of Smiles. You’ve heard a lot about Thailand’s bad reputation on the popular tourist trails and you want to go off the beaten track and prove the idiots wrong. You arrive at Ban Nowhere and you’re charmed by the peaceful settings and the friendly, generous and seemingly altruistic people. You thought you’ve found paradise until … The story can be continued in a number of ways. This book focusses on issues related to money and spending. If you’re like most Farangs (White foreigners), you’ll become an instant celebrity soon after you settle in. You make friends faster than lingerie models on Facebook. People bring food and snacks to you every single day. You can’t believe your luck. You think you may retire here without spending any money until … There is usually only one course the story can take from here. Some people will vehemently disagree with my observations and interpretations. They may not need to read my book – yet as they probably haven’t reached the second “until”. If you don’t believe that generalisations are generally true, and that there is no such thing as typical Thai behaviour, then you probably shouldn’t be reading this book either. The not-so-lucky folks out there often turn to online forums for advice and consolation. This is not always helpful as every Farang would claim to be an expert and judgementally dismiss the victims’ predicament as the result of being a sex tourist and going for bar girls, prostitutes and spoilt politicians’ daughters. Of course, most of the observations here do not apply to Westernised, modern-thinking Thais. The mentality I’m describing is something very common in the general population. It needs to be understood from the start that Thailand’s unhealthy money culture does not only apply to shady characters.
