Mudlarks are similar to metal detectorists in that they search for treasure - but - usually, mudlarking is confined to rivers, especially the River Thames. You will need a Thames foreshore permit issued by the Port of London Authority in order dig in the mud of the Thames River. Older artefacts which could be of archaelogical interest will need to be reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme Finds Liaison Officer at the Museum of London.
