Christ Died For Our Sins written by Jarvis J. Williams and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-18 with Religion categories.

In Christ Died for Our Sins, Jarvis J. Williams argues a twofold thesis: First, that Paul in Romans presents Jesus' death as both a representation of, and a substitute for, Jews and Gentiles. Second, that the Jewish martyrological narratives in certain Second Temple Jewish texts are a background behind Paul's presentation of Jesus' death. By means of careful textual analysis, Williams argues that the Jewish martyrological narratives appropriated and applied Levitical cultic language and Isaianic language to the deaths of the Torah-observant Jewish martyrs in order to present their deaths as a representation, a substitution, and as Israel's Yom Kippur for non-Torah-observant Jews. Williams seeks to show that Paul appropriated and applied this same language and conceptuality in order to present Jesus' death as the death of a Torah-observant Jew serving as a representation, a substitution, and as the Yom Kippur for both Jews and Gentiles. Scholars working in the areas of Romans, Pauline theology, Second Temple Judaism, atonement in Paul, or early Christian origins will find much to stimulate and provoke in these pages.

Isaiah Baker Commentary On The Old Testament Prophetic Books written by J. Gordon McConville and has been published by Baker Academic this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-25 with Religion categories.

The book of Isaiah has been regarded from the earliest Christian period as a key part of the Old Testament's witness to Jesus Christ. This commentary by highly regarded Old Testament scholar J. Gordon McConville draws on the best of biblical scholarship as well as the Christian tradition to offer a substantive and useful commentary on Isaiah. McConville treats Isaiah as an ancient Israelite document that speaks to twenty-first-century Christians. He examines the text section by section--offering a fresh translation, textual notes, paragraph-level commentary, and theological reflection--and shows how the prophetic words are framed to persuade audiences. Grounded in rigorous scholarship but useful for those who preach and teach, this volume is the second in a new series on the Prophets. Series volumes are both critically engaged and sensitive to the theological contributions of the text. Series editors are Mark J. Boda, McMaster Divinity College, and J. Gordon McConville, University of Gloucestershire.

The Wages Of Sin written by Gillian Keys and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-08-01 with Religion categories.

This work highlights the growing dissatisfaction with the Succession Narrative hypothesis. Keys argues rather that 2 Samuel 10-20 is a self-contained document in its own right, a theological biography examining the nature of punishment for sin in the life of David. The nexus of sin and punishment is the motivating force behind the document. Of particular interest to many will be the opening chapter, which charts in detail the development of the Succession Narrative hypothesis from Rost until the present day. Also notable is the author's accounting for the absence of much of the David material from Chronicles.
