Then each husband promptly answered, 'what of that? You shall have another. Begin at once to arrange your coieur for two tiaras.' Excerpt from The Philadelphia Police: Past and Present Probably the most important branch of municipal government is the department of police. What the condition of affairs would be in a great city like Philadelphia without this controlling power for good order and protection is simply indescribable. It is a mighty force that few people in the ordinary walks of life ever stop to think of. They take it as a matter of course that they are able to go and come at all hours of the day and night in all parts of this great city without molestation. They do not realize what the consequences would be if this human dyke against the waves of crime and out rage should give way for a day or even an hour. Excerpt from The Herriges Horror in Philadelphia: A Full History of the Whole Affair, a Man Kept in a Dark Cage Like a Wild Beast for Twenty Years, as Alleged, in His Own Mother's and Brother's House "Man's inhumanity to man Makes countless thousands morn." Every now and then the world is startled with an event of a like character to the one which has just aroused in the city of Philadelphia the utmost excitement, and which came near producing a scene of riot and even bloodshed. John Herriges is the name of the victim, and for an indefinite period of from ten to twenty years has been confined in a little cagelike room and kept in a condition far worse than the wild animals of a menagerie. What adds an additional phase of horror to the case of this unfortunate creature is the fact that he was thus confined in the same house with his own brother and mother. To our minds this is the most abhorrent feature of the whole affair. We can imagine how a stranger, or an uncle, or an aunt possessed with the demon of avarice could deliberately imprison the heir to a coveted estate in some out of the way room or loft of a large building where the victim would be so far removed from sight and sound as to prevent his groans and tears being heard or seen. But how a brother and, Merciful Heaven, a mother could live in a shanty of a house year after year with a brother, and son shut up and in the condition in which the officers of the law found poor John Herriges, is more than we can account for by any process of reasoning. It only shows what perverted human nature is capable of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture, Vol. 1: Containing Communications on Various Subjects in Husbandry Rural Affairs The Philadelphia Society tor promoting Agriculture, was formed in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty five, by some citizens, only a few of whom were actually engaged in husbandry, but who were convinced of its necessity; and of the assistance which such an association, properly attended to, would afford to the interests of agriculture. The society' continued to meet regularly, for several years; - and published numerous communications from practical men, in the news papers of the day, on various interesting subjects; and thereby contributed to diffuse the knowledge of many improvements in agriculture; the general adoption whereof, has visibly tended to increase the product, and to improve the qualities of the soil of Pennsylvania. The continuance of a long war with Great Britain had effectually precluded all friendly intercourse, and prevented the receipt of all information from that country, (in a language generally understood here) not only of the improvements in agriculture there existing, but of those in other European countries, wherein the practice and principles of good husbandr)- are universally attended to. The system generally pursued here at that time, was bad in the extreme. It consisted in a series of exhausting grain crops, with scarcely any interruption, for several years; after which, the land was abandoned to weeds and natural grass, under the fallacious idea of rest; and, when completely worn out, new land was cleared. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture, Vol. 3: Containing Communications on Various Subjects in Husbandry Rural Affairs In presenting to agriculturists our third volume, we evince our desire to promote their interests, by promulgating all the information our correspondents have favoured us with, on the subjects we deem generally important. Some, of minor consideration, have been omitted. But we thankfully acknowledge, the public and patriotic motives of all. We should be highly gratified by the increase in number of our correspondents; because it would evidence an increase of a spirit of true patriotism, in thus diffusing a knowledge of the art, by which the great body of our citizens, in this agricultural country, not only gain a plentiful subsistence, but contribute to that of others; and mainly augment the public prosperity. The reception given to our former publications, justifies a hope, that the present will be favourably, and, we trust, profitably accepted. We conceive that it will not suffer by a comparison with our former volumes; as many subjects arc brought forward well worthy attention. If the circumstances of our country require an extension of domestic manufactures, and especially of those in which capitalists engage; the labours of the husbandman should be encouraged, as all-important to them. Whilst our belligerent situation blocks up the channels of external commerce, and calls our citizens to the fields of warfare, thereby abstracting from agriculture, the labourers it demands; it is the more necessary to know how to use the number spared to us, with the greatest economy and advantage. Thus the-cultivators of the soil, ' in those regions, will find markets at their doors, sufficient to require the great proportion of their products.
