Descriptive Psychology and the Person Concept maps the common ground of behavioral science. The absence of a shared foundation has given us fragmentation, a siloed state of psychological theory and practice. And the science? The integrity of choice, accountability, reason, and intention are necessary commitments at the cornerstone of civilization and any person-centered psychotherapy, but when taught along with a “scientific requirement for reductionism and determinism, reside in contradictory intellectual universes. Peter Ossorio developed the Person Concept to remedy these problems. This book is an introduction to his work and the community of scientists, scholars, and practitioners of Descriptive Psychology. Ossorio offered these maxims that capture the discipline’s spirit: 1. The world makes sense, and so do people. They make sense to begin with. 2. It’s one world. Everything fits together. Everything is related to everything else. 3. Things are what they are and not something else instead. 4. Don’t count on the world being simpler than it has to be. The Person Concept is a single, coherent concept of interdependent component concepts: Individual Persons; Behavior as Intentional Action; Language and Verbal Behavior; Community and Culture; and World and Reality. Descriptive Psychology uses preempirical, theory-neutral formulations and methods, to make explicit the implicit structure of the behavioral sciences. The goal is a framework with a place for what is already known with room for what is yet to be found. Provides a way to compare theories, coordinate empirical findings, and negotiate competent disagreement Offers guidance for effective case formulation and integration of therapies Explores the dilemmas of personhood and the complexities of human and nonhuman action, investigating "what is a person, and how can we be sure?" Follows the implications of Hedonics, Prudence, Ethics, and Aesthetics as intrinsic perspectives and reasons for action Applies these concepts to personality and social dynamics, consciousness, relationship change, emotional behavior, deliberation, and judgment Provides a guide to establishing and restoring empathy--especially when it's difficult

What is a person? Why do we count certain beings as persons and others not? How is the concept of a person distinct from the concept of a human being, or from the concept of the self? When and why did the concept of a person come into existence? What is the relationship between moral personhood and metaphysical personhood? How has their relationship changed over the last two millennia? This volume presents a genealogy of the concept of a person. It demonstrates how personhood--like the other central concepts of philosophy, law, and everyday life--has gained its significance not through definition but through the accretion of layers of meaning over centuries. We can only fully understand the concept by knowing its history. Essays show further how the concept of a person has five main strands: persons are particulars, roles, entities with special moral significance, rational beings, and selves. Thus, to count someone or something as a person is simultaneously to describe it--as a particular, a role, a rational being, and a self--and to prescribe certain norms concerning how it may act and how others may act towards it. A group of distinguished thinkers and philosophers here untangle these and other insights about personhood, asking us to reconsider our most fundamental assumptions of the self.

1.1 Concept of Person Philosophy is concerned with the enquiry into the nature of things, that is, the way in which men have expressed their wonder about the nature of things. It is the nature of philosophy to make every effort to get back to the simplest beginnings. The ancient philosophers wanted to understand them- selves and the world in which they lived. Even though they were mostly con- cerned with the nature of the physical world, they did not neglect the concept of the self or person. Man is a mystery to himself. He is a part of nature and shares some common features with every living thing on the earth. Socrates' famous dictum "Know thy self," indicates a task that man apparently can nei- ther avoid nor complete. In modern times due to the development of science we can understand better how the human mind works. This is due to the develop- ments in the psychological and neurological sciences. The most important question that man has ever posed about himself is the question regarding the relation between his self and his body. Because not only is the concept of a person one of the most important, it is also one of the most plausible candidates for membership of that special group of concepts which, according to Strawson, constitute the 'massive central core of human th inking' 1- To find an answer to the relation between person, mind and body is the task of philosophy.
