A Return To The Object written by Susanne Kuechler and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-27 with Social Science categories.

This book draws on the work of anthropologist Alfred Gell to reinstate the importance of the object in art and society. Rather than presenting art as a passive recipient of the artist's intention and the audience's critique, the authors consider it in the social environment of its production and reception. A Return to the Object introduces the historical and theoretical framework out of which an anthropology of art has emerged, and examines the conditions under which it has renewed interest. It also explores what art 'does' as a social and cultural phenomenon, and how it can impact alternative ways of organising and managing knowledge. Making use of ethnography, museological practice, the intellectual history of the arts and sciences, material culture studies and intangible heritage, the authors present a case for the re-orientation of current conversations surrounding the anthropology of art and social theory. This text will be of key interest to students and scholars in the social and historical sciences, arts and humanities, and cognitive sciences.

Looking back over the twentieth century, Hartoonian discusses the work of three major architects: Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry and Bernard Tschumi, in reference to their theoretical positions and historicizes present architecture in the context of the ongoing secularization of the myths surrounding the traditions of nineteenth century architecture in general, and, in particular, Gottfried Semper's discourse on the tectonic. Providing a valuable contribution to the current debates surrounding architectural history and theory, this passionately written book makes valuable reading for any architect.

Part of the acclaimed 'Documents of Contemporary Art' series of anthologies . This exciting collection is a pleasure to read from beginning to end...This is a welcome introduction to, and provocative rethinking of the object, in all its many formal and theoretical formations. - Jo Applin, author of Eccentric Objects: Rethinking Sculpture in 1960s America (2012). The object is this thing that refuses to go away. Virtual reality, conceptual art and numerous philosophical and psychological traditions have sought to de-thingify the world, but the object, in its many forms, persists. This anthology surveys reappraisals of what constitutes the 'objectness' of production, with art as its focus. Among the topics it examines are the relation of the object to subjectivity; distinctions between objects and 'things'; the significance of the object's transition from inert mass to tool or artefact; and the meanings of the everyday in the found object, repetition in the replicated or multiple object, loss in the absent object, and abjection in the formless or degraded object. It also explores artistic positions that are anti-object; theories of the experimental, liminal or mental object; and the role of objects in performance. The object becomes a prism through which to re-read contemporary art and better understand its recent past. Artists surveyed include: Absalon, Art in Ruins, Iain Baxter, Louise Bourgeois, Marcel Broodthaers, Lygia Clark, Claude Closky, Brian D. Collier, Jimmie Durham, Fischli & Weiss, General Idea, Isa Genzken, Gruppe Geflecht, Eva Hesse, Mike Kelley, John Latham, Sherrie Levine, Allan McCollum, Gustav Metzger, Hélio Oiticica, Gabriel Orozco, Katrina Palmer, Adrian Piper, Falke Pisano, Issa Samb, Gregor Schneider, Kenneth Snelson, Song Dong, Josef Strau, Alina Szapocznikow, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Éric Watier and Erwin Wurm. Writers include: Arjun Appadurai, Karl Beveridge, Bill Brown, Ian Burn, Jack Burnham, Lynne Cooke, Gillo Dorfles, Jean Fisher, Ferreira Gullar, Charles Harrison, Paulo Herkenhoff, Yacouba Konaté, Rosalind Krauss, Julia Kristeva, Bruno Latour, Jean-François Lyotard, Lev Manovich, Ursula Meyer, Kristie Miller, Bruno Munari, Georges Perec, Dieter Roelstraete, Marcus Steinweg, Hito Steyerl, Amie Thomasson, Gérard Wajcman and Slavoj Zizek

Fundamentals Of Object Databases written by Suzanne Dietrich and has been published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-10 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Object-oriented databases were originally developed as an alternative to relational database technology for the representation, storage, and access of non-traditional data forms that were increasingly found in advanced applications of database technology. After much debate regarding object-oriented versus relational database technology, object-oriented extensions were eventually incorporated into relational technology to create object-relational databases. Both object-oriented databases and object-relational databases, collectively known as object databases, provide inherent support for object features, such as object identity, classes, inheritance hierarchies, and associations between classes using object references. This monograph presents the fundamentals of object databases, with a specific focus on conceptual modeling of object database designs. After an introduction to the fundamental concepts of object-oriented data, the monograph provides a review of object-oriented conceptual modeling techniques using side-by-side Enhanced Entity Relationship diagrams and Unified Modeling Language conceptual class diagrams that feature class hierarchies with specialization constraints and object associations. These object-oriented conceptual models provide the basis for introducing case studies that illustrate the use of object features within the design of object-oriented and object-relational databases. For the object-oriented database perspective, the Object Data Management Group data definition language provides a portable, language-independent specification of an object schema, together with an SQL-like object query language. LINQ (Language INtegrated Query) is presented as a case study of an object query language together with its use in the db4o open-source object-oriented database. For the object-relational perspective, the object-relational features of the SQL standard are presented together with an accompanying case study of the object-relational features of Oracle. For completeness of coverage, an appendix provides a mapping of object-oriented conceptual designs to the relational model and its associated constraints. Designed as a text for the senior undergraduate and postgraduate students in computer science, this compact and comprehensive book provides a clear insight into Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and delineates the major areas where OOP principles can be profitably applied. The fundamental tenets of OOP, viz. encapsulation, inheritance and abstraction syndrome are skillfully analyzed. What's more, the book blends theory and applications in the most adept fashion to make it extremely handy for the students. The text takes C++ as an example (it is not just another book on C++ by any means) and details some of the fundamental requirements from the OOP angle. In addition, it discusses the various aspects of software development using OOP. An indepth coverage is given to the design, usage and re-usage of containers. Besides, the book covers such topics and GUIs (particularly MS-Windows) and advanced GUI programming concepts. Distributed Object Architectures with CORBA is a guide to designing software comprised of distributed components. While it is based on OMG's Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) standard, the principles also apply to architecture built with other technology (such as Microsoft's DCOM). As ORB products evolve to incorporate new additions to CORBA, the knowledge and experience required to build stable and scalable systems is not widespread. With this volume the reader can develop the skills and knowledge that are necessary for building such systems. The book assumes a familiarity with object-oriented concepts and the basics of CORBA. Software developers who are new to building systems with CORBA-based technologies will find this a useful guide to effective development.
