Li Po was a Chinese poet of the first century AD. He is generally regarded as China's greatest poet - much like Shakespeare in Britain. This book contains the text of a paper presented to the China Society at the School of Oriental Studies. It is a scholarly paper, mostly comparing LI Po with Tu Fu- a contemporary of LI Po.

Excerpt from The Poet Li Po: A. D. 701-762 At this time, he says at the time of Tu Fu), Li Po from Shantung was also celebrated for his remarkable writings, and the names of these two were often coupled together. In my judgment, as regards impassioned vigour of style, freedom from conventional restraint, and skill in the mere description of exterior things, his ballads and songs are certainly worthy to rub shoulders with Fu. But in disposition of the several parts of a poem, in carrying the balance of rhyme and tone through a composition of several hundred or even in some cases of a thousand words, in grandeur of inspiration combined with harmonious rhythm and deep feeling, in emphasis of parallel clauses, in exclu sion of the vulgar or modern - in all these qualities Li is not worthy to approach Fu's front hedge, let alone his inner chamber 1 Subsequent writers, adds the T'ang History (the work in which this essay is preserved), have agreed with Yuan Chen. Wang An-shih (1021 the great reformer of the eleventh century, observes: Li Po's style IS swift, yet never careless; lively, yet never informal. But his intel lectual outlook was low and sordid. In nine poems out or ten he deals with nothing but wine or women. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. When this was originally published in 1950 this was the fullest biography of one of China’s greatest poets that had ever appeared in any language. It tells the story of the poet’s life against the background of contemporary history and, in doing so, gives a brilliant picture of Chinese life in the eighth century A.D. – during a period of the Tang Dynasty, fertile in great poets, such as Wang Wei, Tu Fu and Mêng Haojan.

Li Po (701-762) is considered one of the greatest poets to live during the Tang dynasty—what was considered to be the golden age for Chinese poetry. He was also the first Chinese poet to become well known in the West, and he greatly influenced many American poets during the twentieth century. Calling himself the "God of Wine" and known to his patrons as a "fallen immortal," Li Po wrote with eloquence, vividness, and often playfulness, as he extols the joys of nature, wine, and the life of a wandering recluse. Li Po had a strong social conscience, and he struggled against the hard times of his age. He was inspired by the newly blossoming Zen Buddhism and merged it with the Taoism that he had studied all his life. Though Li Po's love of wine is legendary, the translator, J. P. Seaton, includes poems on a wide range of topics—friendship and love, political criticism, poems written to curry patronage, poems of the spirit—to offer a new interpretation of this giant of Chinese poetry. Seaton offers us a poet who learned hard lessons from a life lived hard and offered his readers these lessons as vivid, lively poetry—as relevant today as it was during the Tang dynasty. Over one thousand poems have been attributed to Li Po, many of them unpublished. This new collection includes poems not available in any other editions.

Li Po (701-762) rivals Du Fu for the title of China's greatest poet, and is considered to be the great Romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). He grew up in Sichuan province, China, and set out at the age of twenty-five to travel in the country, writing poems. A well-read student of both Confucianism and Taoism in his youth, and later an unofficial court poet, Li Po is credited as the author of over one thousand poems about wine, friendship, nature, solitude, and time. His works are revered for their exquisite imagery, rich and effortless language, and cadence - although some critics admonished his violation of traditional poetic form. The poet was a member of a group in Shandong called the "Six Idlers of the Bamboo Brook," an informal group dedicated to literature and wine. Popular legend tells that an intoxicated Li Po drowned after falling from his boat in an attempt to embrace the reflection of the moon in the Yangtze River.

Li Po (AD 701-62) and Tu Fu (AD 712-70) were devoted friends who are traditionally considered to be among China's greatest poets. Li Po, a legendary carouser, was an itinerant poet whose writing, often dream poems or spirit-journeys, soars to sublime heights in its descriptions of natural scenes and powerful emotions. His sheer escapism and joy is balanced by Tu Fu, who expresses the Confucian virtues of humanity and humility in more autobiographical works that are imbued with great compassion and earthy reality, and shot through with humour. Together these two poets of the T'ang dynasty complement each other so well that they often came to be spoken of as one - 'Li-Tu' - who covers the whole spectrum of human life, experience and feeling.

Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: ...red face grow pale. The lofty peaks shoot up cloudward in rows. If one foot higher, they would touch the heaven. The dead pine trees cling to the cliff, hanging headmost over the abyss. The sparkling cascades and the spurting torrents vie with one another to make the bellowing din. Anon, a giant boulder tumbles from the crag-head; a thousand mountain walls resound like thunder. 0 you wayfarers from afar, why do you come hither on this direful road? The gate of the Sword Parapet stands firm on its frightful height. One man defending it, a thousand men could not break it open. And the keepers of the gate are not of your kin, They may turn, I fear, to wolves and leopards. The Steep Road to Shuh Fleeing at morn before the savage tigers, Fleeing at eve before the huge serpents, Men are killed and cut up like hemp, While the beasts whet their fangs and lick the blood. Though many pleasures there may be in the brocade city of Shuh, It were better to return to your house quickly. The road to Shuh is more difficult to climb than to climb the steep blue heaven. I shrug my shoulders and heave a long sigh--gazing into the west. This is one of the most admired and most difficult poems of Li Po, certain portions of it being as vague as they are beautiful. Some commentators maintain that this was written at the time of the An Lu-shan rebellion, when the emperor Hsuan Tsung fled to Ssuchuan, to which course Li Po was opposed; but being in no position to declare his opinion openly, the poet voiced it thus in verse covertly. The poem hints at the double danger for the emperor in leaving his capital to the rebels who are tigers and serpents as well as in trusting his person to the hands of the strangers of Shuh, who might turn to wolves and leopards, while...
