The Sense of Space brings together space and body to show that space is a plastic environment, charged with meaning, that reflects the distinctive character of human embodiment in the full range of its moving, perceptual, emotional, expressive, developmental, and social capacities. Drawing on the philosophies of Merleau-Ponty and Bergon, as well as contemporary psychology to develop a renewed account of the moving, perceiving body, the book suggests that our sense of space ultimately reflects our ethical relations to other people and to the place we inhabit. "I like the combination of sober scholarship with imaginative thought and writing. David Morris is fully at home in phenomenology, while being quite knowledgeable of existing and pertinent scientific literature. Having mastered both, he creates a dynamic tension between them, showing how each can fructify the other, albeit in very different ways. The result is truly impressive.

How do we perceive the space around us, locate objects within it, and make our way through it? What do the senses contribute? This book focuses on touch in order to examine which aspects of vision and touch overlap in spatial processing. It argues that spatial processing depends crucially on integrating diverse sensory inputs as reference cues for the location, distance or direction response that spatial tasks demand. Space and Sense shows how perception by touch, as by vision, can be helped by external reference cues, and that ‘visual’ illusions that are also found in touch depend on common factors and do not occur by chance. Susanna Millar presents new evidence on the role of spatial cues in touch and movement both with and without vision, and discusses the interaction of both touch and movement with vision in spatial tasks. The book shows how perception by touch, as by vision, can be helped by external reference cues, and that ‘visual’ illusions that are also found in touch depend on common factors and do not occur by chance. It challenges traditional views of explicit external reference cues, showing that they can improve spatial recall with inputs from touch and movement, contrary to the held belief. Space and Sense provides empirical evidence for an important distinction between spatial vision and vision that excludes spatial cues in relation to touch. This important new volume extends previous descriptions of bimodal effects in vision and space.

The Neuropsychology of Space: Spatial Functions of the Human Brain summarizes recent research findings related to understanding the brain mechanisms involved in spatial reasoning, factors that adversely impact spatial reasoning, and the clinical implications of rehabilitating people who have experienced trauma affecting spatial reasoning. This book will appeal to cognitive psychologists, neuropsychologists, and clinical psychologists. Spatial information processing is central to many aspects of cognitive psychology including perception, attention, motor action, memory, reasoning, and communication. Any behavioural task involves mentally computing spaces, mechanics, and timing and many mental tasks may require thinking about these aspects as well (e.g. imaging the route to a destination). - Discusses how spatial processing is central to perception, attention, memory, reasoning, and communication - Identifies the brain architecture and processes involved in spatial processing - Describes theories of spatial processing and how empirical evidence support or refute theories - Includes case studies of neuropsychological disorders to better illustrate theoretical concepts - Provides an applied perspective of how spatial perception acts in the real world - Contains rehabilitation possibilities for spatial function loss

This new book brings together Doreen Massey's key writings on threeareas central to a range of disciplines. In addition, the authorreflects on the development of these ideas and outlines her currentposition on these important issues. The book is organized around the three themes of space, placeand gender. It traces the development of ideas about the socialnature of space and place and the relation of both to issues ofgender and debates within feminism. It is debates in these areaswhich have been crucial in bringing geography to the centre ofsocial sciences thinking in recent years, and this book includeswritings that have been fundamental to that process. Beginning withthe economy and social structures of production, it develops awider notion of spatiality as the product of intersecting socialrelations. In turn this has lead to conceptions of 'place' asessentially open and hybrid, always provisional and contested. These themes intersect with much current thinking about identitywithin both feminism and cultural studies. Each of the themes is preceded by a section which reflects onthe development of ideas and sets out the context of theirproduction. The introduction assesses the current state of play andargues for the close relationship of new thinking on each of thesethemes. This book will be of interest to students in geography, social theory, women's studies and cultural studies.

The contemporary challenge of postmodernity draws our attention to the nature of reality and the ways in which experience is constructed. Sensuous Geographies explores our immediate sensuous experience of the world. Touch, smell, hearing and sight - the four senses chiefly relevant to geographical experience - both receive and structure information. The process is mediated by historical, cultural and technological factors. Issues of definition are illustrated through a variety of sensuous geographies. Focusing on postmodern concerns with representation, the book brings insights from individual perceptions and cultural observations to an analysis of the senses, challenging us to reconsider the role of the sensuous as not merely the physical basis of understanding but as an integral part of the cultural definition of geographical knowledge.
