After seven years experience as a doctor working in hospitals in Australia, New Guinea, and England, I had become convinced that human suffering and happiness are largely rooted in our behaviour, in particular, the attitudes behind our behaviour. Over two and a half thousand years, Buddhist psychology has been adopted into many different cultures, from the Middle East to the Far East, and from Indonesia in the south to Siberia in the north because it unerringly explains what the human mind is, how it functions, and its underlying role in causing both happiness and suffering. These Buddhist teachings may have challenged my scientific world-view to the core, but after eighteen months of thorough investigation, I accepted them to be valid. In 1975 I became a monk in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition to learn more, and to incorporate this knowledge into my life as best I could. I saw this big step to be an opportunity to further my medical training through application of the proverb, ‘Physician, heal thyself.’ Although I still have a long way to go on my own path, many have requested me to share with them what I have learned since then; hence this book. -Venerable Thubten Gyatso The Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive offers this digital edition of The World and Ourselves: Buddhist Psychology. Unde malum from where does evil come? That is the question that has plagued humankind ever since Eve, seduced by the serpent, tempted Adam to taste the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Throughout history the awareness of good and evil has always been linked to the awareness of choice and to the freedom and responsibility to choose this is what makes us human. But the responsibility to choose is a burden that weighs heavily on our shoulders, and the temptation to hand this over to someone else be they a demagogue or a scientist who claims to trace everything back to our genes is a tempting illusion, like the paradise in which humans have at last been relieved of the moral responsibility for their actions. In the second series of their conversations Zygmunt Bauman and Stanislaw Obirek reflect on the life challenges confronted by the denizens of the fragmented, individualized society of consumers and the form taken in such a society by the fundamental aspects of the human condition - such as human responsibility for the choice between good and evil, self-formation and self-assertion, the need for recognition or the call to empathy, mutual respect, human dignity and tolerance.

Sally V. Keil envisions some of Carl Jung's most important discoveries for today's world, to guide us in our relationships, in the kind of work we can do successfully and most of all, in living according to our own innate nature, without apology. From the very first page we find easy-to-understand psychological insights we can apply to ourselves and use in every situation and with every person we encounter. In his years as a doctor, Jung noticed that people orient themselves toward their circumstances in different but perceptible ways. These different types of people were found among peasants and laborers, as well as among the educated and aristocracy, among both men and women and among children as well as adults. Jung gave these individual dispositions names and wrote about them as typology, which he used in his relationships with others, speaking in the language suited to their nature. As Keil describes so accessibly, Jung actually discovered a set of simple but fundamental dynamics as to how our psychology works to create our own ways of experiencing life. Once we understand these dynamics, we see ourselves, our relationships and our world in new ways. The book guides us as observers of ourselves and others, leading to self-awareness and from there to self-acceptance, potential for growth and more harmonious relationships. We learn how to enhance our natural talents, appreciate one another, nurture commonalities and find hidden functions that endow our lives with an intensity and beauty not found elsewhere. We discover that a life lived according to our own nature brings satisfaction and joie de vivre.

Transforming Ourselves, Transforming the World is an insightful collection that articulates how Jesuit colleges and universities create an educational community energized to transform the lives of its students, faculty, and administrators and to equip them to transform a broken world. The essays are rooted in Pedro Arrupe’s ideal of forming men and women for others and inspired by Peter-Hans Kolvenbach’s October 2000 address at Santa Clara in which he identified three areas where the promotion of justice may be manifested in our institutions: formation and learning, research and teaching, and our way of proceeding. Using the three areas laid out in Fr. Kolvenbach’s address as its organizing structure, this stimulating volume addresses the following challenges: How do we promote student life experiences and service? How does interdisciplinary collaborative research promote teaching and reflection? How do our institutions exemplify justice in their daily practices? Introductory pieces by internationally acclaimed authors such as Rev. Dean Brackley, S.J.; David J. O’Brien; Lisa Sowle Cahill; and Rev. Stephen A. Privett, S.J., pave the way for a range of smart and highly creative essays that illustrate and honor the scholarship, teaching, and service that have developed out of a commitment to the ideals of Jesuit higher education. The topics covered span disciplines and fields from the arts to engineering, from nursing to political science and law. The essays offer numerous examples of engaged pedagogy, which as Rev. Brackley points out fits squarely with Jesuit pedagogy: insertion programs, community-based learning, study abroad, internships, clinical placements, and other forms of interacting with the poor and with cultures other than our own. This book not only illustrates the dynamic growth of Jesuit education but critically identifies key challenges for educators, such as: How can we better address issues of race in our teaching and learning? Are we educating in nonviolence? How can we make the college or university “greener”? How can we evoke a desire for the faith that does justice? Transforming Ourselves, Transforming the World is an indispensable volume that has the potential to act as an academic facilitator for the promotion of justice within not only Jesuit schools but all schools of higher education.

World As Lover World As Self written by Joanna Macy and has been published by Parallax Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-10-09 with Philosophy categories.

This overview of Joanna Macy's innovative work combines deep ecology, general systems theory, and the Buddha's teachings on interdependent co-arising. A blueprint for social change, World as Lover, World as Self shows how we can reverse the destructive attitudes that threaten our world, with concrete suggestions on how to address "An Inconvenient Truth". The essays are based on the Buddha's teachings of "Paticca samuppada" (interdependent co-arising). Reduced to deceptively simple terms this says that everything in the world- every object, feeling, emotion, and action is influenced by a huge, all-inclusive web of factors. Any change in the condition of any one thing in this web affects everything else by virtue of interconnectedness. It makes World as Lover World as Self a quintessential guide for those readers who want to integrate their Buddhist practice with concerns for social issues like global warming. It also breaches the dualities that have haunted much of both Eastern and Western thought, namely the dichotomies between mind/body, humanity/nature, reason/emotion, self/world, science/spirituality. The premise is that self-centeredness, and modern individualisms are ultimately destructive for the environment. We are not individuals separate from the world. Instead we are always "co-arising" or co-creating the world, and we cannot escape the consequence of what we do to the environment. Joanna Macy presents a re-focusing on the beauty of the natural world as personally nourishing and replenishment as one way to move away from our self-centeredness. For this revised edition the author will be adding some chapters as well as removing others. The new ones will deal largely with her new work around the "Great Turning" that will add a somewhat more visionary, future-oriented, and strategic dimension to the book. World as Lover, World as Self shows us how to realize that the earth is an extension of ourselves and how to discover the knowledge, authority and courage to respond creatively to the crises of our time. Foreword Thich Nhat Hanh
