Technical And Regulatory Perspectives On Information Retrieval And Recommender Systems written by Markus Schedl and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-23 with Computers categories.

This book provides an in-depth treatment of three important topical areas related to regulatory, ethical, and technical discussions in the context of information retrieval and recommender systems (IRRSs): (1) bias, fairness, and non-discrimination, (2) transparency and explainability, and (3) privacy and security. Sometimes referred to as trustworthiness dimensions, they are analyzed by taking an interdisciplinary perspective and incorporating views from computer science, social sciences, psychology, and law and by particularly considering the related technical challenges, societal impact, ethical considerations, and regulatory approaches. After an introduction, the book first provides an overview of recent initiatives and already operational policies to regulate AI technology and discusses them in the context of IRRSs, focusing on regulations in Europe, the US, and China. Subsequent chapters present categories of biases, their relation to fairness and non-discrimination and ways to discover and mitigate harmful biases; major facets of transparency, with a focus on explainability (including common strategies to achieve it), traceability, and auditability; and privacy and security including technical approaches to mitigate privacy risks such as anonymization techniques and encryption methods. Eventually, the last chapter provides an outlook on the grand challenges in IRRSs, such as dealing with discrepancies between formal attempts, human perception, and regulatory frameworks for trustworthy IRRSs; understanding the capabilities and limitations of existing solutions in terms of fairness, transparency, and privacy; and adopting a multistakeholder perspective when developing solutions for fair, transparent, and privacy-preserving IRRSs. The book targets a mostly technical readership and aims to equip it with the necessary understanding of the ethical implications of their research and development in IRRSs as well as of recent policy initiatives and regulatory approaches. While a basic knowledge of IRRSs is assumed to fully comprehend the more technical and algorithmic parts of the book, even a lay audience in terms of technical background should benefit from the book.

While Artificial intelligence is considered to be the engine of innovation and growth for years to come, little is known about the factors that secure a competitive advantage for companies using it. This thesis addresses this gap. Combining case study research and survey research, this study provides empirical evidence for the resource data as a potential source of competitive advantage but contingent to the type of offering. The study further propose data as a complementary asset that partially explains a strong increase of corporate research in the field of artificial intelligence contradictory to an overall decline of corporate science activities.

Although recent advances in technology have made life easier for individuals, societies, and states, they have also led to the emergence of new and different problems in the context of security. In this context, it does not seem possible to analyze the developments in the field of cyber security only with information theft or hacking, especially in the age of artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons. For this reason, the main purpose of this book is to explain the phenomena from a different perspective by addressing artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons, which remain in the background while focusing on cyber security. By addressing these phenomena, the book aims to make the study multidisciplinary and to include authors from different countries and different geographies. The scope and content of the study differs significantly from other books in terms of the issues it addresses and deals with. When we look at the main features of the study, we can say the following: Handles the concept of security within the framework of technological development Includes artificial intelligence and radicalization, which has little place in the literature Evaluates the phenomenon of cyber espionage Provides an approach to future wars Examines the course of wars within the framework of the Clausewitz trilogy Explores ethical elements Addresses legal approaches In this context, the book offers readers a hope as well as a warning about how technology can be used for the public good. Individuals working in government, law enforcement, and technology companies can learn useful lessons from it.

Artificial intelligence quickly changed from a theory to a practical power - it spreads through every part of modern life. As people go from specific uses to more general kinds of intelligence, they must face a main change. This change involves what machines do and how people think about intelligence. The book, Cognitive AI - From Deep Learning to Artificial General Intelligence, looks at that change. This writing serves a wide, serious group of people - it is for graduate students and researchers in artificial intelligence and cognitive science. Educators along with industry workers also read this to get a better grasp of the path from current AI systems to future cognitive architectures. We do not just list technologies. We deal with the concepts, morals, technical issues as well as societal problems that sit at the core of creating machines that think. The chapters lay out this story bit by bit; they start with basic learning systems. They move to cognitive modeling and designs. The book finishes with important questions about governance, combining fields along with how people will work in the future. Throughout the text, the reader learns about current subjects. Some of these are large language models, explaining how systems work, reasoning with symbols plus networks, the safety of general artificial intelligence, and people working with machines. I appreciate the researchers, collaborators along with students who inspired this work. The growing group of thinkers also recognizes that making intelligent systems requires scientific exactness and philosophical thought. My hope is that this book guides plus starts talks for anyone who wants AI to develop responsibly and creatively.
