This book offers a comprehensive survey on the study of scalar implicatures, a central topic in modern pragmatics. This multidimensional and interdisciplinary topic is intensely studied in contemporary linguistics, psycholinguistics, and philosophy of language. Being one of the most prominent topics in pragmatics, they offer a window into the mind of communicative agents. On the one hand, scalar implicatures are closely related to the lexicon and grammar of natural languages. On the other hand, they shed light on how the linguistic meaning is enriched with context and speakers’ intentions and knowledge. Starting from an overview of the classic Gricean theory and the theoretical development introduced by post-Gricean scholars, the book illustrates the modern accounts of scalar implicatures across the domains of theoretical linguistics, such as semantics, pragmatics, and psycholinguistics. The central part of the book is devoted to the review of the most influential studies on the acquisition, comprehension, and processing of these pragmatic inferences. The last part of the volume focuses on open issues concerning scalar implicatures by illustrating recent experimental studies and theoretical accounts advanced by the authors in collaboration with several scholars.

Recently, there has been considerable L2 research on interfaces between different modules of grammar (internal), such as syntax-semantics, or between grammar and other cognitive systems (external), such as semantics-pragmatics. Sorace's (2011) Interface Hypothesis proposes that L2 learners, even at highly proficient levels, often fail to integrate information at the external interfaces where the grammar interacts with extralinguistic components. While much early L2 work has focused on the syntax-discourse interface, this dissertation tests language acquisition at another understudied external interface, namely the semantics-pragmatics interface, by taking the first step to experimentally explore presuppositions (PSP, e.g., stop) and scalar implicatures (SI, e.g., sometimes and not always). Secondly, Slabakova (2010) indicates that the high rate of DSI computation by L2 speakers may be due to the difficulties and challenges L2 speakers face in suspending inferences. However, the issue of suspending pragmatic inferences by L2 speakers has not been tested empirically. Thus, by using a covered-box paradigm, this dissertation aims to examine not only the computation of pragmatic inferences, but more importantly the suspension or cancellation of pragmatic inferences by L2 speakers. The data obtained from a covered-box picture selection task completed by 41 L1-Mandarin Chinese L2-English speakers and 38 native English speakers indicate that L2 speakers had no difficulties in computing PSP, DSI and ISI, as well as in suspending DSI and ISI, challenging the claim from the Interface Hypothesis. However, the findings uncovered that suspending PSP was demanding for L2 speakers due to the semantic complexity involved in suspending PSP and L2 speakers' lack of sensitivity to contextual cues. The overall results suggested that regardless of the fact that PSP and the two types of SI are situated at the same external interface, they present different levels of challenges to L2 speakers. These findings demonstrated the complexity of L2 speakers' behavior at the semantics-pragmatics interface, different from the holistic view put forth by the Interface Hypothesis, and further offer new insights into a fine-grained understanding of the interpretation of pragmatic inferences in a second language.

Quantity Implicatures written by Bart Geurts and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-12-02 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In recent years, quantity implicatures - a type of pragmatic inference - have been widely debated in linguistics, philosophy, and psychology, and have been subject to an enormous variety of analyses, ranging from lexical, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic, to various hybrid accounts. In this first book-length discussion of the topic, Bart Geurts presents a theory of quantity implicatures that is resolutely pragmatic, arguing that the orthodox Gricean approach to conversational implicature is capable of accounting for all the standard cases of quantity implicature, and more. He shows how the theory deals with free-choice inferences as merely a garden variety of quantity implicatures, and gives an in-depth treatment of so-called 'embedded implicatures'. Moreover, as well as offering a comprehensive theory of quantity implicatures, he also takes into account experimental data and processing issues. Original and pioneering, and avoiding technical terminology, this insightful study will be invaluable to linguists, philosophers, and experimental psychologists alike.

Scalar implicatures have enjoyed the status of one of the most researched topics in both theoretical and experimental pragmatics in recent years. This Research Topic presents new developments in studying the comprehension, as well as the production of scalar inferences, suggests new testing paradigms that trigger important discussions about the methodology of experimental investigation, explores the effect of prosody and context on inference rates. To a great extent the articles reflect the state of the art in the domain and outline promising paths for future research.

This is the first extended discussion of preferred interpretation in language understanding, integrating much of the best research in linguistic pragmatics from the last two decades. When we speak, we mean more than we say. In this book Stephen C. Levinson explains some general processes that underlie presumptions in communication. This is the first extended discussion of preferred interpretation in language understanding, integrating much of the best research in linguistic pragmatics from the last two decades. Levinson outlines a theory of presumptive meanings, or preferred interpretations, governing the use of language, building on the idea of implicature developed by the philosopher H.P. Grice. Some of the indirect information carried by speech is presumed by default because it is carried by general principles, rather than inferred from specific assumptions about intention and context. Levinson examines this class of general pragmatic inferences in detail, showing how they apply to a wide range of linguistic constructions. This approach has radical consequences for how we think about language and communication.
