A Word Fitly Spoken explores significant poetic devices within the four alphabetic acrostic psalms found in Book I of the Psalter. The majority of scholarly opinion has been that these acrostics are poetically and artistically deficient due to the writers' and editors' preoccupation with the alphabetic pattern. In contrast to this view, A Word Fitly Spoken proposes that the acrostic pattern contributes to, rather than detracts from, the poetic artistry of these psalms. In an effort to promote a holistic, canonical reading of the four acrostic poems within Book I of the Psalter, this study also examines the linguistic and grammatical connections within the text. Such a close reading repeatedly demonstrates the emotive power and the imagination of this literature in contradiction to its supposedly stiff, wooden nature. A Word Fitly Spoken is attuned to the frequent plays on word and sound that occur throughout these four poems and as such would be useful in graduate courses on biblical interpretation, Hebrew poetry, or the Psalms.

A unique devotional, with an acrostic for each book of the Bible, interspersed with acrostic poems on faith-based topics. The carefully crafted acrostics stimulate the reader to see familiar events and ideas from new and unexpected angles. Those relating to the Bible offer a user-friendly and elliptical insight for the newcomer, and a rapid overview and refresher for those more familiar with scripture. The poems, which are placed within their biblical context, are thought-provoking, original and occasionally humorous. Most are complemented by Bible references for further meditation and reflection. This collection serves equally well as a devotional or simply as an entertaining read.

An appreciation of the form and artistry of texts is essential to the understanding of their content, and nowhere is this more evident than in the case of biblical poetry. But poetic form is also worthy of appreciation in its own right, and as the studies in this collection show, Hebrew poetry can be seen as a monument to the literary-artistic achievement of the ancients. Great strides have been made in the investigation of the form and structure of the biblical texts, and no new study of the Hebrew Bible can afford to ignore the fruitful work that has been done in this field. This useful collection presents in a handy format an ample harvest of research by many of the world's leading Hebrew Bible scholars who have published their work in the pages of "Vetus Testamentum" in recent decades. It provides a fascinating reflection of the continuing new discoveries of the richness of the biblical text, which informs the lively present-day study of the Hebrew Bible as world literature.

"The alphabetic acrostic is one of the most easily identifiable poetic forms in the Hebrew Bible. Yet its very obviousness has tended to deflect deeper exploration of its structure and purpose. There is no priori reason that alphabetic acrostics should be less creative, expressive, or complex than other psalms. Thus the essays collected here investigate the acrostic format as a legitimate option for Israelite poets rather than as the refuge of uninspired epigones. Freedman focuses on the technical aspects of the psalms: metrics, syllable counts, colon length, and symmetry within the psalm. The results show that the poets' creativity functioned at all levels, from the individual line to the complete psalm." -- Back Cover
