Nutrition experts for decades have recommended the healthy Mediterranean diet. Dr. Steve Parker incorporates the latest nutrition science breakthroughs in this newly revised second edition of his award-winning "Advanced Mediterranean Diet." Dr. Parker's weight management plan is highly customizable, depending on the user's weight, sex, and preferred dieting style. In addition to a time-honored portion-controlled diet, Dr. Parker presents the world's first low-carb Mediterranean diet: the Ketogenic Mediterranean Diet. This is a two-for-one deal. You'll discover 1) which foods are the healthiest, 2) which carbohydrates are particularly fattening, 3) why we no longer have to worry about dietary total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, 4) how to lose weight by watching portion sizes or calories, 5) how to lose weight by limiting carbohydrate consumption, 6) which of these two popular dieting methods is optimal for you, and 7) 64 easy and delectable recipes. The traditional Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, olive oil, judicious amounts of wine, with modest portions of meat and poultry. This way of eating is linked to longer lifespan and reduced risk of heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and dementia. The book includes advice on how to avoid weight regain, instruction on exercise, a general index, a recipe index, and scientific references. All measurements are given in both U.S. customary and metric units.

The author's goal is to help people lose excess weight while eating Mediterranean-style, leading to better health and longevity. The traditional Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, olive oil, fish, judicious amounts of wine, with minimal saturated fats (e.g, beef and pork). Scientists in the mid-20th century found that this diet was associated with longer life and less chronic disease. Over the last 5 years, nutrition researchers have identified which components of the Mediterranean diet, and in what amounts, lead to the observed health and longevity benefits. Dr. Steve Parker (M.D.), enhances the traditional Mediterranean diet by incorporating these latest scientific breakthroughs. The author reviews nutrition, psychological issues, and the consequences of overweight. Then, four different calorie-level eating plans are laid out. An individual's recommended caloric intake is determined by sex and weight. The eating plans approximate the traditional Mediterranean diet. Dieters choose from an extensive list of readily available foods. Easy recipes are provided but are optional. Dr. Parker, a medical school professor with 24 years¿ clinical experience, also emphasizes the importance of exercise for prevention of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, dementia, and heart attacks. A chapter is devoted to adaptation of the program by people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Later chapters discuss weight-loss surgery and weight-loss pills and nutritional supplements. The final chapter discusses prevention of weight regain. The appendix has a recommended reading list (bibliography), list of helpful Internet resources, and scientific journal references. An index is provided.

Recent large-scale epidemiological studies have confirmed the pre-eminence of the Mediterranean diet for reducing the risk of primary and secondary heart disease and cancer. There is also increasingly convincing evidence for its protective value against diabetes, dementias and other age-related disorders, and for increasing overall longevity. The Mediterranean Diet: Health and Science is a timely, authoritative and accessible account of the Mediterranean diet for nutritionists and dieticians. It discusses the Mediterranean diet in the light of recent developments in nutritional biochemistry, disease mechanisms and epidemiological studies, and also provides advice on nutrition policies and interventions. The Mediterranean Diet: Health and Science opens with an overview of the Mediterranean diet, and this is followed by a survey of the latest epidemiological evidence for its health benefits. There is detailed nutritional information on olive oil, wine, fish, fruit and vegetables and other components of the Mediterranean diet, and this information is used to explain how the diet protects against a range of age-related diseases. The book emphasises the importance of understanding the Mediterranean diet in its totality by discussing the evidence for beneficial interactions between various components of the diet. There are also discussions of how agricultural practices, as well as food preparation and cooking techniques, influence the nutritional quality of the diet. The book concludes by discussing the social context in which the Mediterranean diet is eaten, and public health issues associated with adopting a Mediterranean diet, especially in the context of more northerly countries. Written by nutritional biochemist Richard Hoffman and a past President of the French Nutrition Society, Mariette Gerber, who between them have many years experience in this area, this exciting and highly topical boook is an essential purchase for all nutritionists and dietitians worldwide. Libraries in all universities where nutrition, dietetics and food science and technology are studied and taught should have copies of this excellent book on their shelves.
