Spinning another grand tale, master storyteller David M. Smeltz brings the first terrible year of the Civil War to life. Ancient General Sidney Sawyer, cloaked in counterfeit glory and fortified with cheap bourbon, resumes his notorious memoirs. Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Becky Thatcher, Joe Harper and the carefree tykes from Mark Twain's adventures along the Mississippi are all grown up when the guns of Fort Sumter divide the Union with a line of blood. Fresh from West Point, Lieutenant Sawyer leaves Aunt Polly and wife Amy to nobly answer the colors. He spends the first summer of war stock-jobbing, grafting and trying to gallop the Commanding General's wife. Disgraced but never embarrassed, Sidney is exiled to the staff of unknown General Ulysses Grant. Sawyer malingers through the Battle of Belmont, cringes behind ironclad armor as Rebel shells shiver the timbers, and freezes his arse at the terrible Battle of Fort Donelson. Treacherously captured by his archenemy, the deformed Confederate Captain Calhoun Brassard, Sidney is chained, tortured and literally fattened for slaughter. With the help of the beautiful but deaf mulatto Lizabeth, Sid escapes to the dubious safety of Madam Becky Thatcher's Nashville bordello- but Becky has good reason to hate all Sawyers. Brother Tom abandoned her in a family way and her daddy Judge Thatcher tossed her out to ply the most ancient of professions. Becky excelled at her job and runs the finest knock-shop in Tennessee. She betrays Sid and Lizabeth to Brassard, and in a brawl of knives, guns, and skillets they escape into the heart of the Confederacy. Dodging slave-catchers and Rebel lawmen Sidney tends to his first priority, getting into Lizabeth's skirts. But alas for our boy, she is in love with someone else and his name is Huckleberry. Stealing, lying and impersonating, Sidney works his way back to Union lines. With the help of hibernating woodchucks, rustic beauties, greedy brats, congregations of hillbilly snake-handlers, and the faithful Lizabeth, Sid survives copperheads and typhoid to rejoin the Union Army just in time for Shiloh. Before the battle Sidney reunites with his old friend, the crusading sergeant of Iowa infantry, Huckleberry Finn. Riding through the terrible Battle of Shiloh, Sawyer is always at General Grant's side, the better to use him as a human shield from Johnny Reb sharpshooters. In the Hornet's Nest Sawyer meets another sergeant from home, Tom's childhood chum Joe Harper. Together they fight off waves of Rebel attacks until ammunition, hope and sanity are gone. At a midnight reckoning by Bloody Pond that will leave you breathless, Sidney learns the hard truth of a land divided and the real meaning of the RIVER WAR. In the best history lesson this side of living it, General Sawyer weaves his spell and tells his tale in this, the second of eight packets of his outrageous memoirs- THE ADVENTURES OF SIDNEY SAWYER.

David M. Smeltz, the master of high adventure, spins another grand yarn in the saga of Sidney Thomas Sawyer, the Civil War's greatest scoundrel. In this superbly researched tale, the War Between the States comes to life in the best history this side of living it. Once again the ancient hero Sidney Sawyer charges his snifter with sippin' liquor, cracks his old knuckles and scribbles another installment of his notorious memoirs. Christmas is coming and Sawyer is still licking his wounds from Bloody Antietam. He plans on licking them until the War is over. Our reluctant hero has cringed through enough combat and covered himself with enough fraudulent glory for any man. But Sawyer is lured from his happy home, the arms of his loving wife Amy and the spectacular bosoms of the stunning Pietronella by General Grant's own pappy. There is a fortune in Rebel cotton to be made along the Father of Waters and Old Man Grant reckons Colonel Sawyer is just the man to smuggle it north. Instead of easy graft, Sidney is cornered by Confederate raiders, joins the Johnny cavalry at the point of a bayonet, and runs a' foul of the evil Rebel fanatic Purdy Stark. After riding a bloody raid against his own army, Sidney deserts Rebel service and finds sanctuary as a slave driver on a Yazoo Delta plantation. He celebrates the holiday season enjoying horizontal refreshments with the buxom slave girl, Sweet Pea, and abusing the tradition of Southern hospitality by bulling the plantation matriarch all over the parlor. The delicate Southern mistress takes a riding-crop to his hindquarters and brings the curtains down on their heads. His welcome is quite worn out, so with the help of the faithful old slave, Uncle Remus, Sawyer flees down the Yazoo with a string of runaways in tow, Confederate slave catchers on his trail and the avenging Purdy Stark out for blood. With his arse punctured with buckshot and chewed by bloodhounds, Sawyer escapes through a frozen swamp to rejoin the Union Army just in time for Grant's bloody Vicksburg Campaign. Marching through Mississippi's famous mud, battling through vermin infested bayous on ironclad monsters, swimming from burning Mississippi riverboats, and frolicking with beautiful Confederate spies, Sidney spends the spring winning even more counterfeit laurels. With Grant and Sherman's army of Yankee bummers, our hero shirks, malingers and sometimes even fights from Memphis to Jackson. Beside the heroic Sergeant Huckleberry Finn, Sawyer leads Hawkeye infantry against the impregnable fortress of Vicksburg. Wounded, captured, starved, and tortured, Sidney Sawyer must fight for his life in an epic duel on the bluffs high above the mighty Mississippi. As Old Glory is raised above Vicksburg on the glorious Fourth of July, Sawyer has a final reckoning with Purdy Stark and his gang of villains. In a desperate contest that will take your breath away, Sidney Sawyer triumphs as a river of blood flows into the Father of Waters.

Black knights in Yankee blue fight for freedom through the bloody sands of Carolina as Colonel Sidney Sawyer, America's greatest scalawag, battles in the glare of a calcium sun. From Britain to the Red River bayou, and Charleston to Chattanooga, our ever reluctant hero brawls, battles, spies on and skedaddles from homicidal widows, Frenchified hookers, and the Mighty Wadmalaw, King of the Runaway Slaves. With Liberty (the drummer boy who isn't what he seems) Sawyer fights for the life of the Union against a treacherous giant. Marching to the beat of Liberty's drums, the 94th Colored Infantry wins glory as the- MISSOURI YANKEES!The Adventures of Sidney Sawyer series of books is a saga, which will include six novels covering the Civil War from Bleeding Kansas to Appomattox. In his Delaware Avenue mansion in 1910, brooding over the city's outpouring of grief at the passing of Samuel Clemens, ancient General Sidney Sawyer, the Civil War's greatest scoundrel, fortifies himself with cheap bourbon, licks his pencil and begins his outrageous memoirs. Mark Twain's cast of loveable rascals, including Tom Sawyer's not-so-loveable little snitch of a brother, Sidney, are of military age when America divides North from South. Little Siddy grows to be the very image of a soldier (except for the honor part), and when America needed heroes, young Lieutenant Sawyer had the whiskers for it and looked damn fine in his regimentals.

Mark Twain Essays Mark Twain - Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, is perhaps the most distinguished author of American Literature. Next to William Shakespeare, Clemens is arguably the most prominent writer the world has ever seen. In 1818, Jane Lampton found interest in a serious young lawyer named John Clemens. With the Lampton family in heavy debt and Jane only 15 years of age, she soon arried John. The family moved to Gainesboro, Tennessee where Jane gave birth to Orion Clemens. In the summer of 1827 the Clemenses relocated to Virginia where John purchased thousands of acres of land and opened a legal advice store.

Mark Twain's 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' and 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' are widely regarded as classic works of American literature. 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' follows the mischievous young boy Tom Sawyer as he navigates the challenges of boyhood in the antebellum South, showcasing Twain's skillful use of satire and humor. In contrast, 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' delves into deeper themes of morality and freedom as Huck Finn and the runaway slave Jim embark on a journey down the Mississippi River, tackling issues of racism and society. Twain's distinctive literary style is characterized by his keen observations of human nature and his ability to convey complex ideas in a straightforward manner. Mark Twain, a pseudonym for Samuel Clemens, drew inspiration for his novels from his own experiences growing up in Missouri and working as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River. His wit and keen observations of society allowed him to critique the societal norms of his time, making his work both entertaining and thought-provoking. I recommend Twain's 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' and 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' to readers who appreciate timeless coming-of-age stories with social commentary. Twain's masterful storytelling and engaging characters continue to captivate audiences today, making these novels essential reads for anyone interested in American literature.

Deviating from the romanticism of earlier works, American literature that emerged after the mid-19th century adopted a distinct realism and an often critical view of American society. With penetrating analyses, writers such as Henry Adams and Upton Sinclair exposed fundamental flaws in government and industry, while Mark Twain and H.L. Mencken incisively satirized social ills such as prejudice and intolerance. Readers will encounter these and other great minds whose fluid pens challenged the status quo.
