Alan Donovan was a co-founder of African Heritage, the continent's first pan-African gallery, which became a pioneering craft retail and wholesale operation in Nairobi. He later constructed The African Heritage House, inspired by the mud architecture he discovered while traveling across the continent and was the driving force behind numerous music, dance, costume, and food festivals and exhibitions that traveled the world for over three decades. Through his work, he discovered and revealed to the world Africa's rich cultural legacy and beauty. In all, he has made an unprecedented contribution to the promotion of arts and culture in Africa and throughout the world. This work reflects all this and more. It is a panoramic documentary and history of so much that has been achieved; it is the author's own story of forty years in Africa, in which, in his own words, he "searched for the continent's beauty and creativity, passing through the glorious sunrises and magnificent sunsets that encompass the splendor and calamity of each new day ... and found an ageless and vibrant inner beauty." The narrative is chronological, presenting the developments of African Heritage from its beginnings, with its many facets and global influence, to its final days, and its failures resulting in part from the devastating impact of recent global events, terrorism and the war thereon on culture and tourism in Kenya.

The richness of Africa’s heritage at times stands in stark contrast to the economic, health, political and societal challenges faced. Development is essential but in what forms? For whom? Following whose agendas? At what costs? This book explores how heritage can promote, secure, or undermine sustainable development with special focus on sub-Saharan Africa, and in turn, how this affects conceptions of heritage. The chapters in this volume identify shared challenges, good practices and failures, and use specific case studies to provide detailed insights into varied forms of heritage and heritage defining processes on the continent. By critically analysing the often romanticised discourses of ‘heritage’, ‘community engagement’, and ‘sustainable development’ the volume suggests ways of harnessing aspects of heritage to tackle some of the socio-economic and political pressures facing heritage practices on the continent, including the legacies of colonialism.

The African Heritage of American English provides a detailed compilation of Africanisms, identified linguistically, from a range of sources: folklore, place names, food culture, aesthetics, religion, loan words. Presenting a comprehensive accounting of African words retained from Bantu, Joseph Holloway and Winifred Vass examine the Bantu vocabulary content of the Gullah dialect of the Sea Islands; Black names in the United States; Africanisms of Bantu origin in Black English; Bantu place names in nine southern states; and Africanisms in contemporary American English. These linguistic retentions reflect the cultural patterns of groups imported to the United States, the subsequent dispersion of these groups, and their continuing influence on the shaping of American culture.
