This essay examines the prayers, religious songs and the prayer life of the Agikuyu of Kenya to determine if they convey their current understanding of a transcendent, creator God. The conceptual framework assumes that the Agikuyu are a monotheistic people who believe in a supreme being whom they call Ngai (creator/provider). From their close relationship with Ngai flows the very nature of being Agikuyu. Ngai created them, gave them their land and provided for them their sacral world. The methodology used involved interviews based on a snowball selection by Agikuyu field assistants based on criteria determined by the writer. There were two primary variables, namely age and residence. The age variable was Agikuyu over the age of forty and young people between the ages of fifteen and thirty. The residence variable was Agikuyu living in the rural area (Nyeri) and for at least ten years in an urban setting (Nairobi). The results of the research indicate that the primary variables were not as significant as had been expected of the people's current understandings of Ngai. Instead what was found is that all of the Agikuyu respondents believe in the same one Ngai who is father, provider, powerful, close by, deserving of the praise and thanksgiving the people bestow on him through their prayers, religious songs and prayer life. The research did indicate some minor differences, especially among young urbanites, but not significant enough to change their general beliefs about Ngai.

My thesis project, Crossing Rivers, is a novel based on a micro-historical field study conducted October to December 2011 on the pre-colonial culture of the Agikuyu people in Kenya. Included elements are an introduction to the project, combined historiography and literature review, and a two part final project. The novel portion of the project is preceded by the historical field study project, a qualitative approach designed to gain an understanding of the Agikuyu culture before colonialism. in the historical project, a review of files containing interviews and photos is followed by a composite description of pre-colonial life based on those interviews with some annotations from the historical words discussed in the historiography. The goal of the historical novel is to spark an appreciation for the complexity and sophistication of pre-colonial African cultures for a Western audience. For the Agikuyu people whose historical memory is quickly fading into modernity, I hope to provide a window into their past.

Facing Mount Kenya, first published in 1938, is a monograph on the life and customs of the Gikuyu people of central Kenya prior to their contact with Europeans. It is unique in anthropological literature for it gives an account of the social institutions and religious rites of an African people, permeated by the emotions that give to customs and observances their meaning. It is characterised by both insight and a tinge of romanticism. The author, proud of his African blood and ways of thought, takes the reader through a thorough and clear picture of Gikuyu life and customs, painting an almost utopian picture of their social norms and the sophisticated codes by which all aspects of the society were governed. This book is one of a kind, capturing and documenting traditions fast disappearing. It is therefore a must-read for all who want to learn about African culture.

This book is written with a person who is already a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ in mind (or one who by God's grace is considering becoming one); and more specifically, one from the Agikuyu community setting. And not just a believer, but one who is burning with a white-hot passion for the pursuit of the supremacy of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ in all things, especially culture and traditions. The Agikuyu traditional religion and its accompanying rituals promises God's favor and a blessed life to people through periodic strange sacrifices, appeasing of the spirits of the dead and the worship of a tribal god. It contradicts the Holy Scriptures in the fundamental doctrines of God and his purpose for humanity. It craftily creates access to God that is strange to the one way revealed in the Scriptures. Interestingly, this way and form of worship is exclusive to just the Agikuyu community, locking out all the communities in the world. And all this is built upon an unbiblical belief concerning the origin of the tribe. The beliefs, traditions and rituals of the Agikuyu religion fail miserably under the scrutiny of God's true revelation in the Holy Scriptures and in Christ Jesus. And hopefully you shall see all this from God's word and happily let your heart settle on the only place and truth that can give your soul eternal life and fulfilment-In Christ Jesus. Just like it was in the times of Prophet Elijah's controversy with the Baal worship, we are in our own Mt. Carmel decision point as believers from the Agikuyu community. We must decide now which God we shall serve. We cannot continue being torn between two opinions. If there is a god in Kirinyaga (Mount Kenya), let's worship him. But if the true God is in heaven and has revealed Himself through His son Jesus Christ, let's devote ourselves to Him. And only Him! Joseph C. Kihiu Author
