The AGS polarized H− source presently produces 30 to 40 .mu. A of vector H− in 500 .mu.s pulses, with a polarization of 70-75%. The source operates reliably and has been used for polarized physics runs the past two years. There is now a development program in progress which has as its goal an operational vector H− source producing milliamperes of current for the AGS.

Development of a polarized H− source for the AGS polarized proton project, initially begun at Argonne National Laboratory in 1979, has been continuing at Brookhaven National Laboratory since early 1982. A description of the source is given and the status of the project is reviewed.

The AGS polarized H− source is now operational. During a month-long experimental physics run in July 1984, pulses equivalent to 15 .mu. A x 300 .mu.s (approx. 3 x 101° protons) were injected into the RFQ preaccelerator. Beam polarization, measured at 200 MeV, was approx. 75%. After the run, a program to increase the H− yield of the source was begun and significant progress has been made. The H− current is now frequently 20 to 30 .mu. A.A description of the source and some details of our operating experience are given. We also briefly describe the improvement program.

The polarized H− ion source that Argonne National Laboratory and Yale University are building for the AGS polarized beam facility is based on the crossed-beam concept in which a polarized atomic-hydrogen beam, H°, is ionized to H− by a fast neutral cesium beam, Cs°. We describe our studies which will aid in achieving a high intensity polarized H− beam. In particular, we describe time-of-flight studies on the atomic beam and the effect of dissociation nozzle cooling on the velocity distribution. The cesium gun design is described, and a brief discussion of the H°-Cs° interaction region is given.

Development of an intense polarized H− source for the AGS continues at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Initial tests with about one milliampere, 40 keV pulsed neutral cesium beam, colliding with more than two milliampere polarized hydrogen atoms, produced about one-half microampere polarized negative ions, extracted at 20 keV. A new pulsed cesium source with an anticipated output of 5 to 15 mA and an improved neutralizer are under construction.

The AGS polarized H− source (PONI-1) now produces currents of 25-40 .mu. A, and has operated reliably during polarized physics runs. A new polarized source, having as its goal mA's of H-vector, is now under development. An atomic hydrogen beam has been cooled to about 20 K with a forward flux of approx. 1019 atoms/s/sr. A superconducting solenoid having a calculated acceptance angle of 0.1 sr for the cold H° beam, is now being built. An ionizer for the resulting polarized H° beam based on resonant charge exchange of H° with D−, is being tested. 500 .mu. A of H− have been produced by ionizing an unpolarized H° beam using this ionizer.
