In this lively, opinionated, and informative piece of writing, Dr. S.K. Ray applies his characteristic and accessible style to all vital sectors of the Indian economy to present a compact, well-researched, comprehensive, and up-to-date treatise on the subject. He has consistently marshalled facts and figures and brought them to bear on today’s problems of economic developments and their management. The book covers an extensive portfolio of absorbing topics, all in their varied aspects and manifestations. Written with clarity, this book is a unique attempt to analyze, in considerable depth, various facets of socioeconomic growth such as natural resources, population, agriculture, industry, transport and energy. Besides, the issues like economic planning, land and tenancy reforms, economic reforms, inflation, banking structure, international trade and finance, labour policy, industrial monetary system, science and technology, and the atrophies ailing the economy have also been probed. In a nutshell the book skilfully interprets the economy of today’s India to identify her role not only in the development of its own economy but also in relation to the rest of the world. It also identifies the issues, problems and programmes required for the formulation of a strategy for economic growth. The book, a refreshing and significant contribution to Indian economic thinking, will also serve as a valuable textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Commerce and Economics. In addition, it can be of immense help to students appearing in civil services and allied examinations. This brilliant exposition of the Indian economy will also be useful as an important source of reference for scholars, faculty members, administrators, and policymakers.

`The careful and responsible management of the well-being of the population is the very essence of good government.' The World Health Report, 2000. Over the years, Indians have silently witnessed the near-total degeneration of the country's basic health-care services. The slow but certain breakdown of the primary health-care sector has fuelled the unregulated growth of private nursing homes, clinics and trendy health resorts that dish out packaged health care in the name of holistic healing, making health care the prerogative of a fortunate few. In No Place to Go, Subhadra Menon provides a comprehensive account of the changes that have taken place in the country's health sector since Independence. She writes about the unwillingness of doctors to practise in small towns and villages, which has forced people to seek help from unrecognized medical practitioners. She also reveals, by means of detailed case studies, how several well-meaning policies of the government have fallen flat because of the inefficiency of the officials who are meant to implement them, and how cheap, spurious drugs flooding the market have resulted in the tragic loss of many lives. Through it all, however, Menon lauds the islands of positive effort successful community-level programmes and government projects, as well as inspired individuals working to deliver effective health-care services which have proved beyond doubt that people's participation and strengthened linkages between the government and the private sector will one day result in a healthier India.

It’s no secret that certain social groups have predominated India’s business and trading history, with business traditionally being the preserve of particular ‘Bania’ communities. However, the past four or so decades have seen a widening of the social base of Indian capital, such that the social profile of Indian business has expanded beyond recognition, and entrepreneurship and commerce in India are no longer the exclusive bastion of the old mercantile castes. In this meticulously researched book – acclaimed for being the first social history to document and understand India’s new entrepreneurial groups – Harish Damodaran looks to answer who the new ‘wealth creators’ are, as he traces the transitional entry of India’s middle and lower peasant castes into the business world. Combining analytical rigour with journalistic flair, India’s New Capitalists is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the culture and evolution of business in contemporary South Asia.

India And The China Crisis written by Steven A. Hoffmann and has been published by University of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-20 with History categories.

The earliest accounts of the Sino-Indian boundary dispute cast India as the victim of Chinese betrayal and expansionism, but a more favorable image of China vis-a-vis India has appeared since the 1970s. Since then, China has been portrayed as the victim of India's self-righteous intransigence, with the 1962 India-China war occurring because China was provoked into practicing a justifiable form of realpolitik. These two seemingly irreconcilable academic schools of thought still exist. In this case study of India's decision-making between the years of 1959 and 1963, the critical first years of its border conflict with China, Steven A. Hoffmann takes an important step in reconciling the conflicting views of the crisis and of the ascribed reasons for the war that ensued in 1962. Drawing on interviews with Indian officials, military officers, and political leaders and on memoirs and other sources gathered during concentrated research in India, England, and North America between 1983 and 1986, the author provides previously unknown material on the perceptions and realities of Indian decision making. A model for international crisis behavior, as proposed by Michael Brecher, is used to help establish a balanced treatment of information and offer insights into such questions as why India and China both failed to understand one another's frontier psychologies and strategies, and why the Nehru government did not succeed in managing the conflict. This richly detailed and carefully researched approach is invaluable in this time when India and China are once again exploring ways to establish a solid relationship.
