Drawing on economic theory, the authors postulate that a family allocates work -- any work, be it housework, doing the shopping, or earning money outside the home -- on the basis of maximum utility to the family unit. Its ideas on utility are derived from such factors as its income, education, ideology. A carefully crafted research study confirms these ideas on the allocation of work and housework. The impact on the quality of family relationships of such allocations is also considered. 'This book is well written and clearly organized...It is sensitive to the limitations of its methodology and full of suggestive theoretical insights.' -- Choice, October 1983 @3`...an exemplary little volume which should be

We analyse new time diary data from France to explore the relationship between economic variables and husbands' share of housework time. Consistent with both bargaining and specialization models of the family, we find that the greater the husband's share of labor income, the lower his share of housework time; the greater the wife's market hours, the lower his housework time, but the larger his share of housework time. Treating market work as endogenous substantially lowers the size of these estimates, but they remain statistically significant. A parsimonious specification based on the specialization model generates estimates for housework share wage elasticities. The own wage elasticity of wives' housework is -0.3 and the elasticity of husbands' housework share with respect to wives' wages is +0.25.

This paper examines changes in married people's allocation of time since 1980, a period in which female labor supply increased substantially, men's share of household work rose, and the gender wage gap narrowed down. I develop a life-cycle collective household model for market and non-market work, consumption and asset accumulation, which also features lack of commitment to lifetime marriage. Wages in the model shift intra-family bargaining power and induce bargaining effects on outcomes in addition to standard income and substitution effects. I estimate gender-specific preferences and how intra-family bargaining power changes with a narrowing gender gap using data from the PSID. The results suggest that a narrowing gender gap improved women's bargaining power in the family resulting in a shift of household work to their husbands. It also contributed to the increase in female labor market participation. If the gender gap is counterfactually eliminated, the proportion of women in full-time work rises throughout the lifecycle to match approximately that of men. The increase comes from women who cut down household chores and enter the labor market when they previously did not participate.

Economic theories of the household predict that increases in female relative human capital lead to decreases in female housework time. However, longitudinal and crosssectional evidence seems to contradict this implication. Women's share of home time fails to decrease despite increases in women's relative earnings. The literature has proposed social norms on the household division of labor as an alternative explanation. We use the 2002 03 Spanish Time Use Survey (STUS) to explore the presence of social norms associated to the household division of housework and childcare. First, we observe that wives that earn more than their husbands still undertake more than 50% of housework and childcare. Second, we find that a woman's relative share of housework decreases as her relative earnings increase, but only up to the point when she earns the same as her husband. Finally, independently of the definition of childcare, the relative time devoted to childcare does not vary with spouses' relative earnings. All these findings suggest that social norms might be an important factor in the division of household time.
