Excerpt from The Alternating Current Transformer The following pages originated from a course of University lectures. It is hoped that the book will be of use to the engineer and general reader. Some knowledge of elementary alternating currents is presupposed. I have found that the student who grasps the theory of the transformer has little difficulty with the more complicated actions and reactions taking place in the induction motor, and is also helped in his study of synchronous apparatus. Chapters I and II are merely introductory. Chapters III to V, carefully studied, should give the reader a thorough knowledge of the transformer. The tests in Chapter VI should be carried out by the student on a few commercial types. The method of design in Chapter VII is offered as a probable improvement over that usually given in text books. I wish to thank the manufacturers for the loan of cuts used in Chapter X. Thanks are also due the publishers who have maintained their reputation for sparing no effort or expense to make the book mechanically as perfect as possible. I am indebted to Mr. A. S. Kalenborn for reading proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Design of Alternate-Current Transformers The invention of the alternate-current transformer some years ago led to the introduction of the system of high-tension distribution of electric energy for lighting purposes. The saving in the first cost of the copper mains being the chief advantage of the system in the eyes of the promoters, the question of the efficiency of this method of supply, except at full load, was not considered. Now, experience has shown that the cost of the annual supply depends largely on the efficiency of the transformers used, and that the loss at light loads is the most important factor in determining this cost. Hence the design of alternate-current transformers needs more careful attention as the demand for higher efficiency arises. I have endeavoured in the following pages to describe as simply as possible the principles involved in the construction of transformers on economic lines, both as regards first cost and power wasted when working. To the formulae deduced from these principles I have added several others which are useful when determining quickly the dimensions of the various circuits. To enable more to follow the reasoning, higher mathematics have been avoided, although this omission has necessitated the acceptance of certain well-known formulae without proof. The examples worked out and illustrated show the general procedure of designing transformers of different types to fulfil definite conditions. Excerpt from The Alternate Current Transformer in Theory and Practice, Vol. 1: The Induction of Electric Currents For others, content to possess themselves of a more elementary knowledge of the chief phenomena of electro-magnetic induction, the following pages may serve as a guide. Some portions of the book have already appeared as contributions to the electrician, but these have been extended and carefully revised before being again here presented to the reader. Excerpt from The Alternate Current Transformer, Vol. 1 Copenhagen famous as the birthplace of the discovery that an electric current passing through a metallic wire magnetises it circularly and creates round it a magnetic field, the direction of the lines of magnetic force being closed curves surrounding the axis of the wire. Faraday placed these two phenomena side by side before his mental vision, and he asked himself whether it was possible that the magnetic field of force gene rated round a current-carrying conductor could develop in an adjacent circuit an induced current just as the charged body calls forth an induced electrostatic charge on the neighbouring conductors. Some notions on this subject of electric current induction had before 1831 occupied his mind at intervals, but these early experiments did not lead to any satisfactory results. In 1825, in the month of November, Faraday stretched alongside of a wire connected with a galvanometer another through which an electric current was flowing, but both then and on December 2, 1825, and on April 22, 1828, he had to record of his experiment that it gave no result. A very little step in experimental research often separates failure from success. A reversal of operations, a change of some dimension, an alteration of some proportion, is often all that is needed to step from the region of failure into the field of discovery and achievement. In this case it may have been the apparently trivial one of starting the electric current in one wire before completing the circuit of the galvanometer. Excerpt from The Alternate Current Transformer in Theory and Practice, Vol. 2: The Utilization of Induced Currents The superiments (sampson's Annals, Vol. I., p. This was published in October, 1836. W. Sturgeon did not appear at this time to have been acquainted with Faraday's Ninth series of Electrical Researches; but after repeating mostof Henry's experiments, and adding some of his own, he arrived at the conclusion that the action of the spiral conductor in creating a shock was due to the collapse of the magnetic lines of force.
