Excerpt from The American Natural History, Vol. 3: A Foundation of Useful Knowledge of the Higher Animals of North America; Birds (Concluded) Whenever, during the hour just before sunset, you see a good-sized bird with dark plumage, long, sharp-pointed wings, and a big white spot on the under surface of each wing, wheeling, soaring, dropping and circling through the air, you may know that it IS a Nighthawk, catching insects. Its flight is graceful and free, and when on the aerial war-path it is a very industrious bird. Some people compare this bird on the wing with bats; but I see no resemblance save the bare fact of semi-nocturnal flight. This bird, and the other mem bers of its Family, are among the very few North American birds that capture winged insects high in mid-air, and for this reason, even if. There were no other, all the Goatsuckers should be most rigidly protected everywhere. The time for shooting the Nighthawk for sport has long gone by, never to return. Excerpt from The American Naturalist, Vol. 3: A Popular Illustrated Magazine of Natural History; November, 1869 The fact that iory Similar Species exist in Japan and the Anroor Valley. Siberia, contradicts, indeed, the theory of climatic causes, since we know that the climate of those regions is very similar to that of our Atlantic States, where no Similar species exist. At the same time, their existence there sug gests the probable central point from which all originated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from American Natural History, Vol. 3: Part 1. Mastology From other species of the 0x kind, the Bison is well distingulshed by the following peculiarities. A long shaggy hair clothes the fore part of the body, forming a well marked beard beneath the lower aw, and descending behind the knee In a tuft. This hair rises on the top of the head In a/dense mass, nearly as high as the extremities Of the horns. Over the forehead it is closely curled, and matted so thickly as to deaden the force of a ri e ball, which either rebounds, or lodges in the hair, merely causing the animal to shake his head as he heavily bounds along. Tells the story of the building of the American Museum of Natural History and Hayden Planetarium, a story of history, politics, science, and exploration, including the roles of American presidents, New York power brokers, museum presidents, planetarium directors, polar and African explorers, and German rocket scientists. The American Museum of Natural History is one of New York City’s most beloved institutions, and one of the largest, most celebrated museums in the world. Since 1869, generations of New Yorkers and tourists of all ages have been educated and entertained here. Located across from Central Park, the sprawling structure, spanning four city blocks, is a fascinating conglomeration of many buildings of diverse architectural styles built over a period of 150 years. The first book to tell the history of the museum from the point of view of these buildings, including the planned Gilder Center, The American Museum of Natural History and How It Got That Way contextualizes them within New York and American history and the history of science. Part II, “The Heavens in the Attic,” is the first detailed history of the Hayden Planetarium, from the museum’s earliest astronomy exhibits, to Clyde Fisher and the original planetarium, to Neil deGrasse Tyson and the Rose Center for Earth and Space, and it features a photographic tour through the original Hayden Planetarium. Author Colin Davey spent much of his childhood literally and figuratively lost in the museum’s labyrinthine hallways. The museum grew in fits and starts according to the vicissitudes of backroom deals, personal agendas, two world wars, the Great Depression, and the Cold War. Chronicling its evolution―from the selection of a desolate, rocky, hilly, swampy site, known as Manhattan Square to the present day―the book includes some of the most important and colorful characters in the city’s history, including the notoriously corrupt and powerful “Boss” Tweed, “Father of New York City” Andrew Haswell Green, and twentieth-century powerbroker and master builder Robert Moses; museum presidents Morris K. Jesup, Henry Fairfield Osborn, and Ellen Futter; and American presidents, polar and African explorers, dinosaur hunters, and German rocket scientists. Richly illustrated with period photos, The American Museum of Natural History and How It Got That Way is based on deep archival research and interviews.

Excerpt from American Ornithology, Vol. 3 of 4: Or the Natural History of the Birds of the United States The ringed plover is very abundant on the low sandy shores of our whole sea coast during summer. They run, or rather seem to glide, rapidly along the surface of the flat sands, frequently spreading out their wings and tail like a fail, and fluttering along, to draw or entice one away from their nests. These are formed with little art, being merely shallow concavities dug in the sand, in which the eggs are laid, and, during the day at least, left to the influence of the sun to hatch them. The parents, however, always remain near the spot to protect them from injury, and, probably, in cold, rainy, or stormy weather, to shelter them with their bodies. The eggs are three, sometimes four, large for the bird, of a dun clay colour, and marked with nume rous small spots of reddish purple.
