Excerpt from The American Pioneer, and His Story: An Address Delivered at Iowa City Iowa on the Occasion of the Fifteenth Annual, Meeting of the Mississippi Valley Historical Association I define the American Pioneer as the man who after the defeat of Braddock, crossed the mountains from the thin line of Atlantic settlements and found his way into Kentucky and Tennessee, halting in his march only when he turned in his tracks and crossed the Ohio River into the great wilderness to the North. I mean the man who, fronting more perils than Ulysses and his followers ever thought of, swept on through the passes that led to the Tennessee, the Holston, the Big Kanawha, and the Ohio, reinforced by the few spirits, remote but courageous, who, in course of time, were led to the same destination up the narrow strip of water known as the Mohawk. This man steadily solidified his settlements in their order of succession, until he had brought into the Federal Union the States of Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Illlinois, Missouri, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. To me, this man reflects the character of the most effective single human movement in history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The family of Barnabas Horton, Puritans who suffered the indignities of religious intolerance and persecution in England, sailed for America in 1635 on the ship, Swallow. In America they met and coped with all the challenges of frontier life, as they journeyed from New England to Virginia, then further west to Indiana, Kansas, and Indian territory. Joseph Horton, born in 1578, is believed to have been the father of Barnabas Horton. Barnabas was born in 1600 in Mousley, England. He married Anne Smith from Stanion, Northamptonshire. Two sons, Joseph (b.1626) and Benjamin (b.1627) were born to them. Anne died shortly after the birth of Benjamin. Barnabas married a second wife, Mary. The family sailed to Hampton, Massachusetts and built their first home. Barnabas died in 1680. His descendants married into the families of Goodknight, Lydy, Stepp, Feearnow, and Cheek.

The challenging and exciting life of James Henry Breasted spanned the most important years of the early western exploration of ancient Egypt. He was at the center of turbulent and world-changing events, including World War I and the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun by Howard Carter. An immensely talented scholar, he explored the Nile Valley and its antiquities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, recording inscriptions and participating in digs with men like Petrie. At his side was his wife, as well as his son Charles, who wrote this admiring work about the life and times of his father. James Breasted was consulted with by such men as General Allenby during WWI. When Howard Carter discovered Tut's tomb in 1922, one of the first men he and his patron, Lord Carnarvon, contacted was Breasted. He not only saw the tomb shortly after its discovery, his effort to mediate between Carter and the Egyptian government when Carter was later locked out of the tomb is detailed here. You cannot understand ancient Egypt or modern Egyptology without knowing about Breasted's remarkable life. He was the founder of the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers, tablets, and smartphones. Although the Smith family name is common, the story of this Smith family is anything but common. This history begins with the ancestors that arrived in the British Colonies of North America in the early 1600's. The majority of the book is made up of the biographies of five generations of the family that are primarily based on first and second hand sources. Some memories are quoted in the text to give a personal perspective. The direct line ancestors of family were expelled from Nauvoo, Illinois in 1846 with other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They faced great hardship crossing the planes and then had to establish homes in the wilderness. The suffering and dedication of those people is inspirational. This family played a significant role in the settlement of the community of Daniel in Heber Valley, Utah. The accounts go up to the 1980's.
