Excerpt from The American Rose Annual, 1921 Very grateful is the Editor for the courtesy of the Secretary of the National Rose Society of England, as well as for the help of our French friends, MM. Turbat and Siret. One regret the Editor expresses: that so small a percentage of the widespread membership of the Society responds with asked-for information and suggestions. Most interesting are the letters that do come, but the Editor feels that it would only be a fair recognition of the time and effort gladly spent on his part if many more rose friends would write in inquiry, in criticism, in suggestion, in helpful attention. Isn't the rose prosperity of America worth a letter and a stamp once a year? A "rose-note" may help another member past a hard spot. Our friends are especially urged to use promptly the enclosed mailing cards. The organization of the Society has been notably advanced in the establishment of the Secretary's office in Philadelphia. The "Members' Handbook" which follows the Annual, with various details and the complete membership list in alphabetical and in geographical forms, is an evidence of the increasing strength of the Society. This strength should increase materially in 1921 through the efforts of our members. The tradesmen whose announcements follow the text are all reliable, and their offerings are commended to our members. It is in no derogation of the great work of European rosehybridizers - also recorded with much particularity in the following pages - that this statement is made. England, Ireland, and Scotland breed admirable roses for Great Britain's humid and less extreme climatic range; France and Germany produce roses reasonably right for Europe; and now America is striving earnestly to grow varieties including all the qualities of those produced across the Atlantic, plus the reserves of vigor and endurance necessary for our climate of extremes in temperature and humidity. Excerpt from The American Rose Annual: The 1918 Year-Book of Rose Progress In the midst of the world war this third American Rose Annual is sent out, in the feeling that there is no least lack of patriotic fervor and no failure to sense the seriousness of the combat for the very life of civilization in thus aiming to promote the prosperity of the rose. Every day that passes, every word from the front, every item concerning the support of the war, shows the worth-whileness of recourse to the best that nature can give, in order that we may more courageously, humanly, and efficiently face the common foe. It is in this feeling that the Editor has secured the important symposium, "Shall We Grow Roses in Wartime?" which immediately follows. Evidences are not lacking that the preceding issues of this little book have served as a magnet to draw together and weld firmly not only the rose-growers of America, but our friendly allies in England and in France. The American Rose Society has in the past year materially increased in strength and importance, and its future seems bright with possibilities. It will be observed by those who consult this Annual that the discussion as to rose stocks is going on encouragingly and importantly. The memorandum in "Rose Notes" relating to importations shows the necessity, if we are to have roses in the United States, of arranging to grow them successfully here. Much space has been given to the presentation of the thoughtful and scientific tests of roses conducted in Captain George C. Thomas' great garden, and also to the report of impartial observations in the Washington and Cornell Test-Gardens. It is believed that rose-lovers will find in these observations and in other articles of the same nature valuable information in considering rose varieties.
