Each year thirty-two seniors at American universities are awarded Rhodes Scholarships, which entitle them to spend two or three years studying at the University of Oxford. The program, founded by the British colonialist and entrepreneur Cecil Rhodes and established in 1903, has become the world's most famous academic scholarship and has brought thousands of young Americans to study in England. Many of these later became national leaders in government, law, education, literature, and other fields. Among them were the politicians J. William Fulbright, Bill Bradley, and Bill Clinton; the public policy analysts Robert Reich and George Stephanopoulos; the writer Robert Penn Warren; the entertainer Kris Kristofferson; and the Supreme Court Justices Byron White and David Souter. Based on extensive research in published and unpublished documents and on hundreds of interviews, this book traces the history of the program and the stories of many individuals. Excerpt from Oxford of Today: A Manual for Prospective Rhodes Scholars The chief aim of this book is to present in a concise, accurate and readable form the more important facts about Oxford University which are of interest particularly to prospective Rhodes Scholars and generally to the academical public. It is in a measure a descendant of a smaller volume written and compiled in 1907 by two American Rhodes Scholars, R. F. Scholz and S. K. Hornbeck, and entitled, Oxford and the Rhodes Scholarships. At that time the Rhodes Scholarships had been in operation but three years. Messrs. Scholz and Hornbeck creditably performed a valuable service in thus making available to prospective American students much information about the University which had been theretofore obtainable only with difficulty, if at all. Their book was published by the Oxford University Press in an edition long since exhausted. Another volume which formerly set forth many of the facts herein presented was the Oxford University Handbook, a semi-official publication issued from time to time by the Oxford University Press. The last edition (1914) is now out of print. Since 1914 many changes have occurred at Oxford. To name but two: Greek is no longer an absolute requirement for admission; and women students (previously admitted only to lectures and examinations) have now full University privileges and may receive degrees. This book is about the seven wills which Cecil Rhodes made between the ages of twenty-four and forty-six which constitute a kind of spiritual autobiography. Rhodes was born in an English parsonage in 1853. He was a boy of delicate health and in 1870 his parents sent him to South Africa to join his brother, Herbert, who was trying to make a living by growing cotton in Natal. In 1871 Cecil and Herbert migrated to the diamond fields of Kimberley where Cecil Rhodes laid the foundation of his fortune. The purpose of this book is to outline the methods by which the Rhodes Trustees have during the last forty years patiently met the problems presented by so new an experiment in international education, to explain the steps by which the American Scholarships have been made more and more successful, and to say what can be said about the record of the men at Oxford and in the United States after their return.
