This edition of The Anatomy of Melancholy is based on a nineteenth-century edition that modernized Burton's spelling and typographic conventions. In preparing this electronic version, it became evident that the editor had made a variety of mistakes in this modernization: some words were left in their original spelling (unusual words were a particular problem), portions of book titles were mistaken for proper names, proper names were mistaken for book titles or Latin words, etc. A certain number of misprints were also introduced into the Latin. As a result, I have re-edited the text, checking it against images of the 1638 edition, and correcting all errors not present in the earlier edition. I have continued to follow the general editorial practice of the base text for quotation marks, italics, etc. Rare words have been normalized according to their primary spelling in the Oxford English Dictionary. When Burton spells a person's name in several ways, I have normalized the names to the most common spelling, or to modern practice if well-known. In a few cases, mistakes present in both the 1683 edition and the base text have been corrected. These are always minor reference errors (e.g., an incorrect or missing section number in the synopses, or misnumbered footnotes). Incorrect citations to other texts (Burton seems to quote by memory and sometimes gets it wrong) have not been changed if they are wrong in both editions. To display some symbols (astrological signs, etc.) the HTML version requires a browser with unicode support. Most recent browsers should be OK.—KTH

This book presents an innovative perspective on the melancholic character of English divine, writer and academic Robert Burton (1577–1640) and how it shaped his confrontations with political and academic powers. Delving on his historical context, personal struggles and earlier literary pieces, this enquiry provides a new reading of The Anatomy of Melancholy, revealing its deeper purposes and how these prefigure the tensions at the heart of modern discourses—therapeutic, political, and economic. Along with Burton’s observations on melancholy, the book highlights the emergence of "melancholic observation", a new kind of reflexive and critical stance on the pressing issues of his time This is well expressed in Burton's presentation of 'melancholizing' as a creative activity, which uses the existential stance as the grounding for utopian imagination and projects performative ways to expose the limitations of political and academic powers. Beyond its analysis of Burton's melancholic character, the book provides a wealth of knowledge that enhances the study and teaching of various subjects. It illuminates the transformation of Renaissance medicine and its embeddedness within religious, academic, and literary discourses and practices, offers insights into historical figures associated with the concept of melancholy, explores shifts in philosophical readership during the era, and uncovers the precursors of psychotherapy. By connecting these diverse subjects, it provides an interdisciplinary approach that enriches our understanding of the cultural and intellectual landscape of the time. Robert Burton on the Melancholic Plague invites readers on an intellectual journey through the profound complexities of Robert Burton's masterpiece, The Anatomy of Melancholy. By intertwining existential, socio-political, geographic, economic, and artistic dimensions of Burton’s work, it opens new avenues of exploration, gaining valuable insights into the motivation and depth of his work.

Jennifer Wunder makes a strong case for the importance of hermeticism and the secret societies to an understanding of John Keats's poetry and his speculations about religious and philosophical questions. Although secret societies exercised enormous cultural influence during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, they have received little attention from Romantic scholars. And yet, information about the societies permeated all aspects of Romantic culture. Groups such as the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons fascinated the reading public, and the market was flooded with articles, pamphlets, and books that discussed the societies's goals and hermetic philosophies, debated their influence, and drew on their mythologies for literary inspiration. Wunder recovers the common knowledge about the societies and offers readers a first look at the role they played in the writings of Romantic authors in general and Keats in particular. She argues that Keats was aware of the information available about the secret societies and employed hermetic terminology and imagery associated with these groups throughout his career. As she traces the influence of these secret societies on Keats's poetry and letters, she offers readers a new perspective not only on Keats's writings but also on scholarship treating his religious and philosophical beliefs. While scholars have tended either to consider Keats's aesthetic and religious speculations on their own terms or to adopt a more historical approach that rejects an emphasis on the spiritual for a materialist interpretation, Wunder offers us a middle way. Restoring Keats to a milieu characterized by simultaneously worldly and mythological propensities, she helps to explain if not fully reconcile the insights of both camps.
