The organic apparatuses, which are indispensable to the mental manifestations, consist of the brain, cerebellum, spinal cord, and the nerves of the external senses and voluntary motion. To make known the structure of these parts is the special object of this volume. History proves that the structure and destination of the nerves were long unknown. Hippocrates and Aristotle, for instance, confounded, under the same general title, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and even blood-vessels.
