Excerpt from The Ancient Family of Cleland: Being an Account of the Clelands of That Ilk, in the County of Lanark; Of the Branches of Faskine, Monkland, Etc;; And of Others of the Name This account is to be considered more as a compilation from various records than a narrative history of the family. There has been no warping of truth to accomplish any end. The authority for each statement is cited, and where hypothetical speculation has been necessary the value to be attached to it has, as far as possible, been estimated. Such work as this will be considered by many but as labour in vain. Still it must be remembered that we all are, in great part, what our forbears made us, and, by looking into the annals of the past, traits of the present and glimpses of the future may often be discerned amidst those dusty records. And surely the pride of the old French nobleman, who said, "Ni prince, ni roi je suis. Je suis le sieur de Coucy." is one to be commended, carrying with it as it does the nobler attributes of a hatred of all infamy and deceit, and a striving after the highest ideals of knighthood.
