The Romans included it in their province of Britannia Prima. During the Saxon Heptarchy it belonged to the Weft Saxons, and at, that time comprized within its limits the county of Cornwall. It Was the third fovereignty they efiablifhed, commencing in 519 and continuing till 828, 1inder18 kings, when Egbert, its lafl fovereign prince, extended his dominion Over all the others and united them un der the general name of England. It is now included in the vvefiern circuit, the province of Canterbury, and diocefe of Exeter; with a form nearly fquare; fituated between Cornwall on the wcfl', and Somerfetfhire on the wit 3 wafhed on the north by the 'severn fea, and on the fouth by the Britiih Channel; being about 80 miles long, 64. Broad, and 220 in circuniference;. Containing 2385 fquare miles, or acres, and inhabitants; has 1 city (exeter), and 37 market towns, viz.
