Excerpt from The Apocalypse of St. John, I-III: The Greek Text, With Introduction, Commentary, and Additional Notes HE Introduction and Commentary and the former Additional Note were set up in the first instance from the somewhat complicated ms. Of Dr Hort's lectures by the skilful printers of the Cambridge University Press. References were then verified and occasionally revised, and abbreviated sentences completed where it seemed necessary. The second Additional Note is added to illustrate Dr Hort's reference on p. Xxxii. A few sentences enclosed in square brackets have been introduced from the notes of Dr Murray and others who attended the course in 1889. The Bishop of Ely and Dr Barnes kindly lent their note-books for this purpose. At Dr Murray's invitation I have seen the work through the press; but this has been done only under his constant and kindly supervision. Excerpt from The Apocalypse of St. John: The Greek Text, With Introduction, Notes and Indices The publication in the present year of Dr Hort's lecture-notes upon the Apocalypse has rendered necessary a few additions both to the introduction and to the notes Of this volume. Until my first edition had been published I was not aware that Dr Hort had lectured upon the subject, and the announcement that his notes were being prepared for the press came as a further and welcome surprise. Their value has been justly estimated by Dr Sanday in his preface to the work, and I need only add the hope that all readers of the present book may be able to consult Dr Hort's fresh and suggestive pages. In regard to the unity Of the Apocalypse I am rejoiced to find that I have the support of his great authority. On the other hand he inclines decidedly to the earlier date, and upon some important points Of exegesis his conclusions differ from those to which I had come. To the latter it has been impossible to do more than refer; upon the date of the book I have added a postscript to the chapter of my intro duction which deals with that question, briefly stating the grounds upon which I am unable to abandon the traditional view. Besides these additions a few corrections, supplied by reviews or received from private friends, have been made in this edition, and the pagination has undergone some necessary changes. The Book of Revelation, often called the Apocalypse of St. John, is one of the central texts of the New Testament. Yet, despite its importance, it is frequently the most misunderstood work in the entire Bible. St. Jerome tells us that "The Apocalypse has as many mysteries as words -- or rather mysteries in every word." Reverend Elwood Sylvester Berry here explains in a simple scholarly way each section of St. John's work to help us view this essential text with pleasure and understanding. Dividing the Book into three parts, Berry helps the reader comprehend the meaning of St. John's words and places them within the fascinating context of the time that they were written. Part I covers from the days of St. John to the opening of the abyss, Part II from the opening of the abyss to its closing and Part III covers from the closing of the abyss to the end of the world. As Revelation 1:3 states Blessed is he that readeth and heareth the words of this prophecy; and keepeth those things which are written in it. Berry's fascinating work should aid any reader wishing to truly hear and understand the words of this prophecy. Reverend Elwood Sylvester Berry was professor at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Maryland. He wrote a number of commentaries on the Bible, The Apocalypse of St. John, published in 1921, was one of his first. He died in 1954.
