Polycarp, Revised d104s With Introductions, Notes, Dissertations, and Translations The Reasons for accepting as genuine the Seven Epistles in the form in which they were current in the age of Eusebius have been stated already. Only a few additional words will be necessary to explain the principles which have been followed in the arrangement of the epistles and in the construction of the text. These seven epistles were written in the early years of the second century, when the writer was on his way from Antioch to Rome, having been condemned to death and expecting to be thrown to the wild beasts in the amphitheatre on his arrival. They fall into two groups, written at two different halting-places on his way. The letters to the Ephesians, Magnesians, Trallians, and Romans, were sent from Smyrna, while Ignatius was staying there and was in personal communication with Polycarp the bishop. The three remaining letters, to the Philadelphians, to the Smyrnaeans, and to Polycarp, were written at a subsequent stage in his journey, at Alexandria Troas, where again he halted for a time, before crossing the sea for Europe. The place of writing in every case is determined from notices in the epistles themselves. The order in which they are printed here is the order given by Eusebius (H.E. iii.36). Whether he found them in this order in his manuscript, or whether he determined the places of writing (as we might determine them) from internal evidence and arranged the epistles accordingly, may be questioned. So arranged, they fall into two groups, according to the place of writing. The letters themselves however contain no indication of their chronological order in their respective groups; and, unless Eusebius simply followed his manuscript, he must have exercised his judgment in the sequence adopted in each group, e.g. Ephesians, Magnesians, Trallians, and Romans. Excerpt from The Apostolic Fathers, Vol. 1 of 2: With an English Translation; I Clement; II Clement; Ignatius; Polycarp; Didache; Barnabas The name of Apostolic Fathers is so firmly established by usage that it will certainly never be abandoned; but it is not altogether a satisfactory title for the collection of writings to which it is given. It means that the writers in question may be supposed to have had personal knowledge of some of the Apostles, but not actually to have belonged to their number. Thus, for. Instance, Clement and Hermes are reckoned as disciples of St. Paul, and Polycarp as a disciple of St. John. It is not, however, always possible to maintain this view Barnabas, to whom one of these writings is ascribed, was not merely a disciple of the Apostles, but belonged to their actual number, and the Didache claims in its title to belong to the circle of the Twelve. It should also be noted that the title does not represent any ancient tradition: there are no traces of any early collection of Apostolic Fathers, and each of them has a separate literary history. Clement of Rome; A Revised Text With Introductions, Notes, Dissertations, and Translations The authorities for the text are three in number, two Greek manuscripts and a Syriac version. (i) Codex Alexandrinus (A), where the Epistles of Clement are added to the New Testament; an uncial manuscript probably belonging to the fifth century. It is fully described above, i. p. 116 sq. It is much blurred and worn, and a leaf has disappeared towards the end of the First Epistle. All deviations from this authority in my text are noted in the apparatus criticus beneath. The lacunae in this manuscript are not stated, except where a various reading is concerned; but a complete list is given at the end of the Epistles. (2) Codex Constantinopolitanus (C), a cursive manuscript dated A.D.1056, and containing the whole of the Two Epistles. It is described fully above, I. p. 121 sq. (3) Syriac Version (S), where the Epistles of Clement are found incorporated among the Epistles of the New Testament in the Philoxenian (Harclean) version. The extant manuscript is dated A.D. 1170. This authority also is described fully in the introduction, I. p. 129 sq. How far this version may be accepted as evidence for the text, and to what extent it seemed advisable to record the variations from the Greek, I have there stated with sufficient precision. The relations of our three authorities to each other, and the value to be assigned to each, are considered at length in the general introduction.
