"If you have ghosts, you have everything, sang Roky Erickson. 'The Apple House' haunts with broken love, emotional whiplash & surprising fires. " - Jack Skelley, The Complete Fear of Kathy Acker "Aiden Brown illuminates a fraught, grief-seeped life in The Apple House which navigates the boundaries and limitations of girlhood and the hauntings one experiences whilst being disturbingly alive." - Lux Alexander "...you catch your reflection in the vanity, and a scooby-doo ghost is standing right behind you, painting its nails, and you spin around and rip off its sheet, and underneath is just a little baby bunny, a little baby bunny with the blood of its enemies pouring out of its little baby bunny mouth? The Apple House is like that. Exactly like that." - Jonathan Blake Fostar (aka Dreamboy Book Club) A.J. Brown writes a haunting book of poems with art to match. It speaks of love, sacrament and the haunting feelings that span human emotion.

Anglophone Imogene Jackson grew up in an English suburb on the uneasy edge of a francophone world. At the age of nineteen she quit college to marry a shoemaker from the close-knit French village of Saint-Ange-du-Lac. For ten years she has lived with her husband, Thomas, above his family's historic shoe shop, immersed in village life. When Thomas dies in a car accident, she is shattered and her hard-won mastery of the French language deserts her. Isolated and grief-stricken, she retreats to her childhood home. There she discovers that a petty drug dealer she knows from the village has rented a ramshackle farmhouse, nicknamed the "Apple House," at the corner of her parents' street and befriended her easily influenced brother Petey. Her childhood obsession with the old house resurfaces and she finds herself confronting events from both her recent and more distant past as her two worlds collide. Set in 1970s Quebec and written with a gentle humour, The Apple House is an intimate portrait of life during a time of great change.

An Anglophone woman running an historic shoe store in a small Quebec village, loses her ability to speak French when her francophone husband is killed in a car accident. Grief-stricken and isolated, she retreats to her childhood home in a nearby English suburb. There she discovers that her mentally-challenged older brother, who still lives with their parents, has come under the influence of a petty drug dealer from the village, now mysteriously living in a derelict farmhouse that she and her husband had planned to buy. Her childhood obsession with the old farmhouse resurfaces, and at the same time she discovers she is pregnant. Feeling unable to cope on her own, she vows to have an abortion. An absorbing account of the record industry's worst nightmare. In the summer of 1969, Great White Wonder, a collection of unreleased Bob Dylan recordings appeared in Los Angeles. It was the first rock bootleg and it spawned an entire industry dedicated to making unofficial recordings available to true fans. Bootleg! tells the whole fascinating saga, from its underground infancy through the CD 'protection gap' era, when its legal status threatened the major labels' monopoly, to the explosion of trading via Napster and Gnutella on MP-3 files. Clinton Heylin provides a highly readable account of the busts, the defeats and victories in court; the personalities – many interviewed for the first time for this book. This classic history has now been updated and revised to include today's digital era and the emergence of a whole new bootleg culture.

Wild Tamed Lost Revived written by Diane Flynt and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-18 with History categories.

For anyone who's ever picked an apple fresh from the tree or enjoyed a glass of cider, writer and orchardist Diane Flynt offers a new history of the apple and how it changed the South and the nation. Showing how southerners cultivated over 2,000 apple varieties from Virginia to Mississippi, Flynt shares surprising stories of a fruit that was central to the region for over 200 years. Colorful characters abound in this history, including aristocratic Belgian immigrants, South Carolina plantation owners, and multiple presidents, each group changing the course of southern orchards. She shows how southern apples, ranging from northern varieties that found fame on southern soil to hyper-local apples grown by a single family, have a history beyond the region, from Queen Victoria's court to the Oregon Trail. Flynt also tells us the darker side of the story, detailing how apples were entwined with slavery and the theft of Indigenous land. She relates the ways southerners lost their rich apple culture in less than the lifetime of a tree and offers a tentatively hopeful future. Alongside unexpected apple history, Flynt traces the arc of her own journey as a pioneering farmer in the southern Appalachians who planted cider apples never grown in the region and founded the first modern cidery in the South. Flynt threads her own story with archival research and interviews with orchardists, farmers, cidermakers, and more. The result is not only the definitive story of apples in the South but also a new way to challenge our notions of history.
