From Science to God offers a crash course in the nature of reality. It is the story of Peter Russell's lifelong exploration into the nature of consciousness — how he went from being a strict atheist, studying mathematics and physics at Cambridge University, to realizing a profound personal synthesis of the mystical and scientific. Using his own tale of curiosity and exploration as the book’s backbone, Russell blends physics, psychology, and philosophy to reach a new worldview in which consciousness is a fundamental quality of creation. He shows how all the ingredients for this worldview are in place; nothing new needs to be discovered. We have only to put the pieces together and explore the new picture of reality that emerges. From Science to God is as much a personal story of an open-minded skeptic as it is a tour de force of scientific and religious paradigm shifts. Russell takes us from Galileo’s den to the lecture halls of Cambridge where he studied with Stephen Hawking. “If you had asked me then if there was a God,” says the best-selling author of his scientific beginnings, “I would have pointed to mathematics.” But no matter what empirical truths science offered Russell, one thorny question remained: How can something as immaterial as consciousness, ever arise from something as unconscious as matter?

This book represents the monumental work of Swami R. Vaidyanathan (1913-1990), who was a research student at Cambridge under Lord Rutherford from 1934 to 1938. Through nine aphorisms, it presents a complete and unique philosophy. It is an independent work, not based on any book or person or symbol, and offers a new view of a way of living and a new conception of self-regarding. Though the main aim of this philosophy is the reduction of human suffering and the promotion of world welfare, the foundation it gives to establish the philosophy to achieve that aim represents a complex network of ideas that are all amazingly interwoven and interrelated.

This edition includes 2 separate but related books, The Physics of Spirit and The Physics of Creation. The Physics of Spirit explains what consciousness "is" within the established context of 20th century physics and 21st century neuroscience. The central scientific point of this book is that consciousness is a real thing that is generated by patterns of neuron firings in our brain. The central mystical point of the book is that our consciousness "is" our individual human "spirit", our spirit-being. Our conscious spirit is made of neurally-generated electromagnetism. Electromagnetism is light, and our conscious spiritual being is "made of" light: in the mystical sense of conscious spiritual light; in the neuroscience sense of neural electricity that is read by EEGs; and in the physics sense of electromagnetic wave energy. Spirit is the "conscious" part of reality, the beings who experience themselves existing and participating in reality. It is our electromagnetic consciousness that can experience an afterlife in heaven after our physical body/brain ceases the electrical functioning that had made those integrations of matter "living" bodies. Conscious spirits are made of electromagnetic wave energy, which is "light", the kind of light we see by, the kind of light that embodies/carries and causally delivers "information" in the optical and radio/wifi/bio-electrical bandwidths. Our conscious spirits, and the information that we causally interact with to produce perceptions and other kinds of conscious "experiences", are made of electromagnetic wave energy, which is a real causally interactive kind of stuff whose workings can be described in terms of physics, neurophysics, and spirituality. The mystical language of spiritual light can be translated into the logical language of the physics and neurophysics of self-aware conscious beings who are "made of light". Our conscious spirits are "real" things that work by physics, not by magic, miracles or fantasy. The Physics of Creation presents an interpretation of the evidence from cosmology to describe a reality in which life and consciousness are not dismissed as miraculous flukes and meaningless anomalies. We are "real", and our existence has to be explained, not ignored. Cosmology's knowledge of events in the very early universe is consistent with what happens when matter that had been in a densely coherent liquid state molecular compound suddenly evaporates into a diffuse gaseous state. "The Big Bang" that created our universe was not the creation of matter out of nothing, nor was it the sudden emergence of matter out of a pre-existing quantum foam. Matter can neither be created nor destroyed, so the matter that now exists has always existed. But our universe suddenly began existing about 14 billion years ago, so all the matter that is now "in" our universe must have existed somewhere else before our universe existed. Conventional physics knows that matter exists in molecular compounds, and a molecular compound exists in 1 of 3 possible phase states: solid, liquid, gaseous. By expanding the current Standard Model cosmological paradigm to include the liquid and solid phase states of matter, The Physics of Creation explains where all this stuff "came from" within a 3 phase states cosmology. Our universe is the cosmological gaseous phase state of matter. The cosmological liquid state generates an electromagnetic energy environment of whole white light that is spiritual heaven. God/Goddess are the conscious electromagnetic spirit who are made of and who live in the electromagnetic light that is generated by the cosmological solid phase state of matter. God/Goddess created the liquid and gaseous phase states of reality by adding electromagnetic motion energy ("heat") to their solid state matter that first melted some of it to a liquid state, then evaporated some of the liquid matter at the Big Liquid Mass Ejection and Big Evaporation event 14 billion years ago.

There has been a growing feeling in my mind that "Health" is too small a title with which to introduce a book that sets forth the noblest science that can possibly be formulated. Although health is one of the most desirable conditions in personal life, and one of the most essential, yet it is but one of the ways of Life that are set forth in the book. It appears to me that, "From Existence to Life; the Science of Self-Consciousness" exactly covers the whole field of that which is herein formulated. It is a science for all-round use, health being but one of the many modes of the Principle of All-Knowledge; and, so far as man is concerned, the science of self-consciousness, formulated correctly, and made use of intelligently, should satisfy the mind and comfort the heart in all the emergencies of self-conscious life, enabling a man to "hold on his way and grow stronger and stronger."

“Ann Druyan has unearthed a treasure. It is a treasure of reason, compassion, and scientific awe. It should be the next book you read.” —Sam Harris, author of The End of Faith “A stunningly valuable legacy left to all of us by a great human being. I miss him so.” —Kurt Vonnegut Carl Sagan's prophetic vision of the tragic resurgence of fundamentalism and the hope-filled potential of the next great development in human spirituality The late great astronomer and astrophysicist describes his personal search to understand the nature of the sacred in the vastness of the cosmos. Exhibiting a breadth of intellect nothing short of astounding, Sagan presents his views on a wide range of topics, including the likelihood of intelligent life on other planets, creationism and so-called intelligent design, and a new concept of science as "informed worship." Originally presented at the centennial celebration of the famous Gifford Lectures in Scotland in 1985 but never published, this book offers a unique encounter with one of the most remarkable minds of the twentieth century.

Mysticism and science: What do they have in common? How can one enlighten the other? By drawing on modern cosmology and ancient Kabbalah, Matt shows how science and religion can together enrich our spiritual awareness and help us recover a sense of wonder and find our place in the universe. Drawing on the insights of physics and Jewish mysticism, Daniel Matt uncovers the sense of wonder and oneness that connects us with the universe and God. He describes in understandable terms the parallels between modern cosmology and ancient Kabbalah. He shows how science and religion together can enrich our spiritual understanding. We “embody the energy” of the big bang, writes Matt. Furthermore, “God is not somewhere else, hidden from us. God is right here hidden from us.” To discover the presence of God, Matt draws on both science and theology, fact and belief, and on the truths embodied in Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity, as well as Judaism. A rich dialogue between the physical and the spiritual, God & the Big Bangtakes us on a deeply personal, thoughtful and inspiring journey that helps us find our place in the universe—and the universe in ourselves.

This volume represents a collective effort to advance research on the perennial problem of matter and consciousness, body and mind. It contains contributions from the fields of philosophy, psychology, physiology, cosmology, and physics. However, its distinctive emphasis is on the key role of theology. The modern natural sciences historically arose as an attempt to read the second book of God—that is, the book of Nature. The contributors to this volume maintain that this orientation of early modern science was correct and that our contemporary understanding of matter and its link with the psychic world can only be plausibly advanced through an appeal to theology. Attempts to resolve the problem of consciousness without theological insights yield problematic reductions of mind to matter or vice versa. The authors maintain that a Christian theological understanding of creation and of humanity provides a framework for a more fruitful way forward in our interdisciplinary attempts to engage the issue.
