"The Art of Chua Mia Tee: A Portrait of a Life's Work is the first significant monograph on the artist Chua Mia Tee, marking his conferment of the Cultural Medallion in 2015. This ambitious undertaking brings together for the first time in a single volume, more than 300works of art that have anchored Chua's reputation as one of Asia's foremost Realist artists. It pays tribute to the artist's celebrated paintings Epic Poem of Malaya (1955), Portrait of Lee Boon Ngan (1957) and National Language Class (1959), and gathers works, including Chua's sculptures and murals from over 40 public, corporate and private collections. Manyo f these works have not been published and have rarely, if ever, been seen by the public. Special features in this book include over 30 of Chua's Parliamentary sketches of1978-79, and portraits of almost every single Singapore President sworn-to-office and nearly every Chief Justice appointed. Chua's stellar list of luminaries in Singapore throw light on the breadth and scope of his commissioned works. This publication also traces how his depictions of the working-class and "vanishing scenes" of a rapidly changing city have captured the hearts and imagination of the larger community. With essays and contributions from prominent writers and museum curators, this monograph illuminates the life, thought and work of one of Singapore's most influential artists. This definitive artist monograph, spanning almost seven decades of Chua's practice since the 1950s, is an invaluable resource and addition to the canon of works in Singapore art research and development"--back cover.

“It’s official. That thing that classic art has been missing is a chubby reclining kitty.” —The Huffington Post Internet meme meets classical art in Svetlana Petrova’s brilliant Fat Cat Art. Featuring her twenty-two-pound, ginger-colored cat Zarathustra superimposed onto some of the greatest artworks of all time, Petrova’s paintings are an Internet sensation. Now fans will have the ultimate full-color collection of her work, including several never-before-seen pieces, to savor for themselves or to give as a gift to fellow cat lovers. From competing with Venus’s sexy reclining pose (and almost knocking her off her chaise lounge in the process) in Titian’s Venus of Urbino, to exhibiting complete disdain as he skirts away from God’s pointing finger in Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam, Zarathustra single-handedly rewrites art history in the way that only an adorable fat cat can.

The essays in this anthology examine artwork and sites in East and Southeast Asia through the lens of eco–art history. In these regions, significant anthropogenic changes to terrain, watercourses, and ecosystems date back millennia, as do artwork and artefacts that both conceptualize and modify the natural world. The rising interest in earth-conscious modes of analysis, or “eco–art history,” informs this anthology, which explores the mutual impact of artistic expressions and local environments in East and Southeast Asia. Moreover, conceptual tools and case studies focused on these regions impart important insights bearing on the development of eco–art history. The book includes case studies examining the impact of the Little Ice Age on court painting and systems of representing marine life in the Joseon period in Korea. Other contributors consider contemporary artistic strategies, such as developing a “sustainability aesthetics” and focusing attention to non-human agents, to respond to environmental damage and climate change in the present. Additional essays analyse the complicated art historical ecology of heritage sites and question the underlying anthropocentrism in art historical priorities and practices. As a whole, this anthology argues for the importance of ecological considerations in art history.

A magical miniature family's adventures in wartime Japan In a dusty library, in the quietest corner of a house in a Tokyo suburb, live the Little People: Fern and Balbo, Robin and Iris. Just a few inches high, sleeping in cigarette boxes and crafting shoes from old book jackets, they need only one thing from their Humans - a nightly glass of milk, served in a sparkling Blue Glass goblet, by a trusted young member of the Human family. But when the Second World War comes to Japan, bringing a dangerous new kind of patriotism, both Humans and their beloved Little People face a world they could never before have imagined. It will take great love, bravery, and a rather loyal pigeon, to bring their unique families back together once more... Born in Tokyo in 1924, Tomiko Inui joined a publishing house in 1950, where she began working as an editor, as well as writing books for children. She published many books over her long career, winning prizes along the way including the Mainishi Publishing Culture Award and the Akaitori Award for Children's Literature. She was also runner-up in 1964 for the Hans Christian Andersen prize. The Secret of the Blue Glass is the first of her books to be translated into English. She died in 2002.
