A comprehensive illustrated biography of Kahlil Gibran, Lebanese-American artist, poet and author of the best-selling inspirational fiction The Prophet. Kahlil Gibran was a Lebanese-born artist, poet, writer and polymath who emigrated to America as a young man in the 1890s, where he became a successful artist and prose poet. His book The Prophet (1923), a series of twenty-six philosophical essays written in poetic English prose became a world-wide bestseller after a sluggish start, selling 40 million copies, and becoming a particular favourite of the 1960s counterculture. As a writer, Gibran encouraged a renaissance in Arab literature; as an artist he painted hundreds of canvases including portraits of artistic celebrities. Raised a Maronite Catholic, his spirituality thought embraces elements of other traditions including Sufi mysticism and the Baha'i faith.

Ever since his best-selling book The Prophet was first published in 1923, Kahlil Gibran has been enchanting spiritually inclined readers with his dogma-free writings so rich with insight, wisdom, beauty, and truth. In this companion collection of little-known writings taken from his published works in Arabic, Gibran encourages us to bravely face life's hardships, and to continuously cultivate a rich inner life to set our moral compasses by. In Visions of the Prophet, Gibran's narrator wrestles with the hypocrisies of Christianity ("Mad John," "The Man on the Cross") and challenges hypocrisy ("Kahlil the Ungodly"). He questions how children born of corrupt marriages and living in poverty can ever become soulful creatures ("The Sister Soul," "The Woman of Tomorrow") and urges us to develop our souls ("Solitude and Isolation"). The one-act dramatic play "The Many-Columned City of Iram" shows a Sufi master, a female sage, and a seeker having a heartfelt discussion about the natures of faith and reality. Containing some of his most intellectually challenging work, Visions of the Prophet reveals a Gibran more vehement and vulnerable than in previous publications.

Beautiful Agitation written by Anneka Lenssen and has been published by University of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-29 with Art categories.

In modern Syria, a contested territory at the intersection of differing regimes of political representation, artists ventured to develop strikingly new kinds of painting to link their images to life forces and agitated energies. Examining the works of artists Kahlil Gibran, Adham Ismail, and Fateh al-Moudarres, Beautiful Agitation explores how painters in Syria activated the mutability of form to rethink relationships of figure to ground, outward appearance to inner presence, and self to world. Drawing on archival materials in Syria and beyond, Anneka Lenssen reveals new trajectories of painterly practice in a twentieth century defined by shifting media technologies, moving populations, and the imposition of violently enforced nation-state borders. The result is a study of Arab modernism that foregrounds rather than occludes efforts to agitate against imposed identities and intersubjective relations.
