De Arte Venandi cum Avibus was written shortly before the year 1250 by Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Sicily and Jerusalem, in whose court, with its remarkably cosmopolitan and highly intellectual life, may be found the real beginning of the Italian Renaissance. In spite of its title, it is far more than a dissertation on hunting. There is a lengthy introduction dealing with the anatomy of birds, an intensely interesting description of avian habits, and the excursions of migratory birds. This dissertation argues that medieval falconry manuals offered readers an important means of interpreting and understanding poetic texts because in their instructions for the physical training of birds they also figured a process of training to read. As falconry and the manuals that describe it gained popularity in the High Middle Ages, so too did the symbolism of falconry in medieval culture. The symbol of an untamed falcon, for instance, stood for an uncontrollable woman to be trained into wifely submission. Despite these manuals’ physical juxtaposition to poetry and the frequent references to falconry training within literary texts, current scholarship in the fields of medieval studies and animal studies has not addressed the ways that falconry manuals influenced medieval reading practices. My project is the first to treat falconry not simply as the subject of a cultural studies approach, but rather as a crucial component in literate and literary culture in the Middle Ages. My examination of falconry manuals and the narrative poetry that neighbors and evokes them reveals that these manuals trained their human audience how to think about different aspects of literary control, particularly the control of women as literary texts portrayed them. The falconry manuals I examine are the most widely translated and disseminated examples of technical falconry terminology. The narrative poetry in these manuscripts contains references to falconry that are often tied to narratives that attempt to impose control over women. The project understands these narratives as examples of feminist reading practices and brings together new formalist as well as historicist reader response methods in its examination of them. In Chapter One, I argue that, beginning with Frederick II of Hohenstaufen’s thirteenth century De arte venandi cum avibus (On the Art of Hunting with Birds), falconry manuals’ written representation of a material practice allowed them to reach beyond falconry qua falconry, participating in a discourse about control of language and about control of reading. Chapter Two takes up the miscellany MS Harley 978, which hosts an Anglo-Norman verse falconry manual fragment immediately preceding Marie de France’s Lais. Reading the falconry manual as a hermeneutic offers a new approach to female enclosure in the lai Yonec and to Marie’s discussion of glossing in her prologue. Chapter Three investigates the figure of Heurodis from the Auchinleck lay Sir Orfeo to argue that the strange mutilation scenes are part of a memory training inflected by the seeling phase of falconry. Chapter Four turns to a short metaphoric phrase comparing women to mewed falcons, and traces its literary history from the twelfth through the fourteenth centuries, from Chrétien de Troyes to Chaucer. It argues that the intergeneric movement and contradictory structure of this metaphor allows feminist revision of female enclosure. Chapter Five concludes the dissertation with a more explicit look at female falconers, symbolized on women’s seals and in a female-authored Italian sonnet from the thirteenth century. This final chapter brings together the texts examined throughout the dissertation to evince a reading practice alternative to the presumed misogynous usage of falconry in narrative poetry. By examining the reading training set up by a non-literary practice such as falconry, my project offers a model for detecting literary theory in material, historical and formal contexts. Beyond the field of medieval studies, my project contributes to the fields of gender and sexuality studies, poetics, and animal studies by examining the intersection of female, textual, and avian bodies. Falconry manuals, because of their positioning in manuscripts, provide a hitherto unexplored means by which to navigate this intersection.

Falconry has been the pursuit of kings, emperors, emirs, khans, merchants and travellers for over 2000 years. It has provided subjects for literature and art, and been discussed in works of zoology, medicine, and law. The papers in this volume originated in a conference held at New York University at Abu Dhabi, and discuss issues on medieval falconry around the Mediterranean. This includes treatises on hawks and falcons, in Spain, the Levant, Byzantium, the Arabic Middle East, and a comparison between European and Arabic manuals. Other contributions consider falconry in Arabic poetry, in Provençal and Italian literature, in little known Neo-Latin poetry, in painting. There is place for legal aspects, with regulations concerning falconry in Jewish law, and for concrete realities: the spread of falconry from Central Asia to Europe as documented by archaeology, falconry at the Sforza court of Milan and the trade of the highly prized gyrfalcons. Through these case studies, the Mediterranean appears as a space of exchange and mutual influence.
