Excerpt from The Art of the Lapidary The upper part of a brilliant is called the crown or bezel and the lower part is known as the pavilion, the line separating the crown from the pavilion and which marks the widest part of the stone is the girdle. The size of the girdle constitutes the spread of the stone and the crown and pavilion taken together constitute its depth. There are also special names given to the various kinds of facets and these are given in diagram in Figure 2. Excerpt from The Science of Gems, Jewels, Coins, and Medals: Ancient and Modern Another form of seal is the very primitive one of a flattish round chalcedony pebble, with sufficient ground off one edge to afford space for engraving a subject, and a hole being made through the middle to receive a string; as a chalcedony, brought from Nineveh, having a very rough attempt in intaglio of a winged horse, the Phoenician symbol Sometimes the hole was enlarged enough to admit a finger. This shape was sometimes modified by being made of an oblong instead of a circular pebble, and the hole made near the end opposite to the intaglio, - these being evidently formed from chalcedony pebbles of an oblong shape. Some were made approaching a pyramidal shape, but these are of a later date, and present more elaborate lapidary work and we have had modern seals made of much the same form, of amethyst, crystal, and other stones, either bored near the top, to receive a ring, or suspended by a golden or other metallic loop - and these are sufficiently orna mental. Excerpt from Precious Stones in Nature, Art, and Literature In the preparation of the work on "Precious Stones," use has been made of all the assistance within reach of the author obtained from writers expressly discoursing upon this topic, from general literature, and from works exclusively scientific. The subject covers a wide field, and is one about which, on some points, there is considerable difference of opinion; therefore, the difficulty of arriving at the truth is much greater than where there is more concurrence of views, and more agreement in the statements of what are claimed to be historical facts. Very few American works on precious stones exist, and those that have been published are generally limited in the number of species described; while nothing, or only very meagre accounts have been given to American gems by foreign authors. The most complete list of native gems is by Mr. George F. Kunz, mineralogist and gem-expert, employed by Messrs. Tiffany and Company, New York, published in the United States Geological Surveys, under the superintendence of Mr. Albert Williams, Jr. The author very gratefully acknowledges the assistance generously offered by Mr. Kunz, who examined parts of the manuscript, and suggested several improvements, more especially in the scientific and practical portions of the work. Excerpt from Antique Gems and Rings, Vol. 2: Illustrations Aztec Lapidary Skill - A very common ornament in the Ometepec (nicaragua) graves is a string of beads, sometimes of chalcedony, and sometimes of lava. The piercing of the latter is wonderful. Many of the beads are an inch in length, ringed all over, and pierced with a hole as fine as ordinary thread. The whole head is no thicker than twine, and most brittle. Had we not seen such wonders before, we never could have deemed such fine work possible without tools of metal. The chalcedony beads are very much larger; they are handsomely rounded and polished, and the hole is carefully bored. Ten to fifteen formed a necklace or bracelet, from which we may conclude, either that they were only worn by children, or else that feathers or other perishable ornaments were interspersed. (boyle's Ride Across a Continent, ii. Aztec Sculpture, executed without metal tools - Boyle found upon Mount Mombacho, near Grenada, many monumental portrait statues, life-size, executed with great fidelity to nature, and carved out of basalt, a material which, even in the ancient world, was only attempted by the Egyptians. He figures specimens which perfectly bear out his description and praise in his Ride Across a Continent, ii. P. 43. Excerpt from A Manual of Precious Stones and Antique Gems I have been induced to compile, for the benefit of amateurs and collectors of antique gems, a concise account of precious stones and antique gems; those usually called hard or fine stones, and also of some other stones and substances which cannot be comprised under the head of precious stones, but are frequently used in jewellery, and for ornamental and glyptic purposes. In this compilation I have frequently adopted the words of the best authorities, Dana, Bristow, Mr. Maskelyne, and others. In the second part I have noticed the principal precious stones, and other substances employed for glyptic purposes, known to the ancients, and described by ancient writers, and have attempted an identification of them with those known to mineralogists of the present day, in which I am much indebted to the writings of Mr. King and Mr. Maskelyne. Excerpt from Gems Gems in their appeal are like the stars. They enchant the eye, they stir the imagination. Then, as with cats and clocks, they are "company." A valuable stone is the one thing that endures. Lace is soon a rag, velvet impossible, flowers dead; but a jewel, if treated kindly, lives forever. It is indeed almost as indestructible as truth or a mighty love. The very word evokes a picture. Is there a richer syllable than "gem"? With the jeweler it means the finest of its kind. But the scholars say a gem, whether of emerald or quartz, is not a gem unless engraved. Other times, other manners. These days the art of gem engraving scarcely exists, while precious stones are everywhere. Before a fine specimen, "gem" leaps to the lips involuntarily. It is suggested that the business classification be known as gemology in distinction from the mineralogy of science. Treatises on gems, comparatively few, difficult of access, generally reference books, are often tough reading. The scientist may be great and useful, but for the neophyte he has scant regard. It seemed as if a small volume, depicting in simple words the salient features of precious stones, garnering from the huge harvest of research the easily assimilable, might not come amiss. If we cannot know all, let us at least grasp something from that vast world of interesting facts to which so many women who wear jewels and men who buy and sell them seem indifferent. Gems have many sides, and even laymen may attain a few. Nothing is more bewildering to the beginner than the manner in which the various mineral families masquerade in one another's clothing. It would be no trick at all were the garnet always red, the sapphire always blue, the topaz always yellow, as at first we suppose. Nature seems positively to enjoy playing pranks which turn all preconceived notions topsy-turvy. Increasing experience confers that sixth sense which gradually distinguishes one family from another. Yet even experts, to be absolutely sure, must sometimes resort to scientific tests. These are the triumphs of modem times over the simple file of the ancients. Now, hardness, specific gravity, refraction, dispersion, dichroicism, by means of delicate and often inexpensive instruments, can precisely be determined. To own a few good stones is an education. Like pictures, their qualities come out only in close association. A judiciously purchased collection may prove a good investment. Excerpt from Historic Inventions The free cities of mediaeval Germany were continu ally torn asunder by petty civil wars. The nobles, who despised commerce, and the burghers, who lived by it, were always fighting for the upper hand, and the laboring people sided now with one party, and now with the other. After each uprising the victors usually banished a great number of the defeated faction from the city. So it happened that, John Gutenberg, a young man of good family, who had been born in Mainz about 1400, was outlawed from his home, and went with his wife Anna to live in the city of Stras burg, which was some sixty miles distant from Mainz. He chose the trade of a lapidary, or polisher of precious stones, an art which in that age was held in almost as high esteem as that of the painter or sculptor. He had been well educated, and his skill in cutting gems, as well as his general learning and his interest in all manner of inventions, drew people of the highest stand ing to his little workshop, which was the front room of his dwelling house.
