"One of the major complaints from older adults -aged 60 years and above, is that their memory for past personal experiences (episodic memory) is declining with age. Older adults have difficulty in remembering the content and context of past events (Craik, 2002). Several neuropsychological and neuroimaging findings have associated an abnormal frontal lobe functioning to impairments in episodic memory, with age (Tulving, et al., 1988; Moscovitch & Winocur, 1992; Rajah & D'Esposito, 2005). Recently, age-related decreases in the dopaminergic neurotransmission system have also been related to an altered frontal lobe functioning and working memory in the elderly (Backman, 2007, 2011; Erixon-Lindroth et al, 2005). Indeed, the prefrontal cortex is the brain structure that not only suffers a marked loss of grey matter (Salat et al, 1999; Raz & Rodrigue, 2006) but also, of D1 dopamine receptors (Suhara et al, 1991, Rinne et al, 1990; Backman et al, 2011). Nonetheless, the contribution of the D1 receptors to episodic memory and prefrontal functioning, as well as the interaction between working memory and prefrontal functioning as possibly underlying episodic memory remains to be clarified. The goals of this thesis were: to examine the association between the D1 receptors within the prefrontal cortex and episodic memory; to examine the association between the D1 receptors within the prefrontal cortex and the prefrontal executive functioning; and to examine the association between the prefrontal executive functioning and episodic memory. Thus, the neural correlates -D1 receptor density, and the prefrontal cognitive processes -working memory, executive functioning, probably underlying the age-related changes in episodic memory are explored. As expected, older adults exhibited impairments in episodic memory recognition and spatial context memory but not in working memory when compared to a younger cohort. Older adults presented a reduced D1 receptor density within the prefrontal cortex, and some areas seem to be more vulnerable to this loss. The D1 receptor density was not associated to the performance on episodic memory tasks, but the cortical thickness of the left inferior frontal gyrus, a variable of no interest, was related to spatial context memory, an association that was not predicted a priori. Furthermore, the age-related loss of the D1 receptor density was negatively associated with the performance on working memory tasks. No other prefrontal cognitive processes were correlated to episodic memory performance. " --
