Language acquisition is a human endeavor par excellence. As children, all human beings learn to understand and speak at least one language: their mother tongue. It is a process that seems to take place without any obvious effort. Second language learning, particularly among adults, causes more difficulty. The purpose of this series is to compile a collection of high-quality monographs on language acquisition. The series serves the needs of everyone who wants to know more about the problem of language acquisition in general and/or about language acquisition in specific contexts.

Tabitha Nix, a rule follower, is hesitant about listening to her father's wishes about her trying to make it into Fidelity, a Quadrant based on government and loyalty. She's accepted into Ardent, the most daring and audacious Quadrant. The Quadrant that just so happens to be surviving off the bloodshed of innocent Graduates in a test known as The Attrition. In Ardent, Tabitha is forced to learn how to fight with and without a weapon, something she's fearful of doing. Her trainers in Ardent push her to the point where she's determined to know why they are training the Graduates this way. She is even willing to break the rules to find out what everyone's hiding from her. She discovers something she wished she never had. In the Ardent test, The Attrition, Tabitha is forced to kill and murder to survive. She questions everything she knows about the four Quadrants, and everyone around her. Who can she trust? Can she even trust herself? What other lies have been fed to her by her father and the government? The answers Tabitha finds uproot more problems in the four Quadrants than she ever imagined and she's forced to make a choice-comply and keep her family safe or rebel and threaten the existence of the only world she's known.

This volume is the first handbook dedicated to language attrition, the study of how a speaker's language may be affected by crosslinguistic interference and non-use. The effects of language attrition can be felt in all aspects of language knowledge, processing, and production, and can offer unique insights into the mind of bilingual language users. In this book, international experts in the field explore a comprehensive range of topics in language attrition, examining its theoretical implications, psycho- and neurolinguistic approaches, linguistic and extralinguistic factors, L2 attrition, and heritage languages. The chapters summarize current research and draw on insights from related fields such as child language development, language contact, language change, pathological developments, and second language acquisition.

"This report investigates attrition in the trades by comparing the rate at which tradespeople leave their occupation with that of professionals. It also determines whether attrition is influenced by economic conditions, and if a trade can provide a good start to a career in the professions. The report concludes that attrition in the trades is no higher than in the professions; the rate of leaving particular occupations may vary, but overall the results between the two are very similar. The economic climate also makes little difference to the attrition rate." - NCVER website.

'Language attrition' describes the loss of, or changes to, grammatical and other features of a language as a result of declining use by speakers who have changed their linguistic environment and language habits. In such a situation there may, for example, be simplification in the tense system or in certain properties of subordinate clauses; some vocabulary items might fall into disuse and phonetic features may be restructured. These changes can be affected by features of the speaker's environment, but also by his or her attitudes and processes of identification. This book provides a detailed and up-to-date introduction to the way in which language attrition can affect language, as well as to the extra- and sociolinguistic features involved. It also familiarizes the reader with experimental approaches to attrition and data analysis techniques and provides hands-on guidelines on how to apply them.
